Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a common condition that causes recurrent abdominal pain and changes in bowel habits such as diarrhea, constipation, or both. Dysmenorrhea and IBS can cause very similar gastrointestinal symptoms, and the current pediatric Rome IV criteria do not exclude symptoms that occur only during menstruation.
