An Overlooked Habitat‐Dependent Link Between Metabolism and Water Loss in Reptiles
We measured the gas exchange of six lizard and six snake species, under high and low air humidity, and two intriguing patterns emerged. First, although desert species lose less water via evaporation than similar‐sized mesic species under similar conditions, water loss is virtually the same when each is exposed to its natural conditions.

Sexual cannibalism (SC), where one mating partner consumes the other in the context of mating, is especially prevalent among spiders. However, the evolution of SC in spiders is still not fully understood. We review key hypotheses for SC and explore how female‐initiated SC has driven the evolution of various male counter‐adaptations to mitigate its ...

A nature‐positive world is more than the sum of its parts
Abstract Adoption of the Kunming–Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (KM‐GBF) has led to further growth in attention being directed to the challenge of bending the curve of biodiversity loss to achieve a nature‐positive world. However, concerns have been raised that, unless progress towards achieving net gain in biodiversity can be measured ...

Generalized graphical mixed models connect ecological theory with widely used statistical models
Abstract Ecological dynamics are often analysed across multiple sites, times, and variables. Ecologists typically represent interactions across space, time, and variables using generalized linear mixed models (GLMMs), generalized additive models (GAM), and structural equation models (SEM).

We have found evidence of behavioural barriers for both hybridization and disease transmission between European wildcats and domestic cats. This includes hierarchical interspecies exclusion enforced by wildcats, as well as sexual selection exerted by wildcat females.

The Embryonic Development of the Cotylean Polyclad Phrikoceros jannetae
ABSTRACT Polyclads exhibit distinct developmental modes ranging from direct to indirect development, with several transitional stages also recognised. The existence of an indirect developmental mode in polyclads with a planktonic life history stage in the form of a free‐swimming larva is unique among all free‐living flatworms and makes polyclads a ...
