When applying evolutionary algorithms to optimization problems, the solution representation issue is of critical importance to the overall performance. This work presents an indirect representation method for genetically encoding partially described solutions of educational timetabling problems that are completed by a “timetable builder” algorithm ...

Direct and Indirect Representations for Evolutionary Design of Objects
2008We follow up on the work of Ebner[1] in studying representationsfor evolutionary design of objects. We adopt both the methodand the simulation framework, and perform more thorough experiments. We design new representations, both direct and indirect, and comparetheir performance to the original work.

Analytic representation of the silicon absorption coefficient in the indirect transition region
Applied Optics, 1988The absorption coefficient of silicon over most of the indirect transi region is calculated by fitting an eleven-parameter equation to observed data, an essential step in modeling silicon solar cells./aip/.

The development of free indirect constructions in Dutch novels [PDF]
Why is the free indirect style such a useful narrative means to portray characters’ minds in fictional texts? This article gives more insight into this phenomenon by analyzing texts from earlier times. Previous studies state that the free indirect style

THE REPRESENTATION OF INDIRECT SPEECH ACTS IN THE OFFICIAL CORRESPONDENCE
2016The article discusses official or business correspondence which unlike a number of other subsystems of the official style represents the actual material for a special research in the aspect of direct and indirect speech acts. The article is motivated by two interconnected empirical and theoretical conditions.

Signal space representation of indirect cochannel interference canceller
1997 IEEE 47th Vehicular Technology Conference. Technology in Motion, 2002The BER performance of a previously proposed indirect cochannel interference canceller (ICIC) in the AWGN channel, is explained by signal space representation. Except for a special case, a fully geometrical representation is not possible. Minimum signal envelope distance has been exploited to explain some of the ICIC receiver's performance.

Evolutionary design targets systems of continuously increasing complexity. Thus, indirect developmental mappings are often a necessity. Varying the amount of genotype information changes the cardinality of the mapping, which in turn affects the developmental process.

Evolutionary computation for automatic Web service composition: an indirect representation approach
Journal of Heuristics, 2017Web services have become increasingly popular in recent years, and they are especially suitable to the process of Web service composition, which is when several services are combined to create an application that accomplishes a more complex task. In recent years, significant research efforts have been made on developing approaches for performing ...

Phylogeny Inference Using a Multi-objective Evolutionary Algorithm with Indirect Representation
2008The inference of phylogenetic trees is one of the most important tasks in computational biology. In this paper, we propose an extension to multi-objective evolutionary algorithms to address this problem. Here, we adopt an enhanced indirect encoding for a tree using the corresponding Prufer code represented in Newick format.

From representational to scopal ‘distancing indirect speech or thought’: A cline of subjectification
Text - Interdisciplinary Journal for the Study of Discourse, 2004'Distancing indirect speech or thought' (DIST) is defined as a noncanonical form of speech or thought representation which is characterized by the singleness of deictic centre across both component clauses: contrary to direct, indirect or free indirect speech/thought, no truly separate consciousness ('Sayer/Cognizant') is represented by the current ...
