An Indirect Tensile Test for Masonry Units
Journal of Testing and Evaluation, 1978Abstract The failure of masonry in laboratory testing of walls and prisms and certain aspects of grouted construction is often the result of tensile splitting. These tensile stresses arise from differences in modulus of elasticity and Poisson's ratio between the masonry unit and mortar or grout. Since tensile splitting is so prevalent in

Indirect tensile versus two-point bending fatigue testing
Proceedings of the Institution of Civil Engineers - Transport, 2008This paper describes a comparison between an indirect tensile fatigue method and the currently preferred European standard two-point bending, trapezoidal fatigue test. A study was undertaken using both tests to determine the fatigue properties of a standard UK asphalt mixture at two temperatures of 10 and 30°C.

Estimating the direct tensile strength of rocks from indirect tests
Arabian Journal of Geosciences, 2021Within the scope of this study, a series of experimental, numerical and statistical analyses were performed in order to find the coefficients that would allow the accurate determination of the tensile strength values of the rocks. In this context, direct and indirect tensile strength values of 9 different rock types including sedimentary, metamorphic ...

Indirect tensile test applied to anisotropic materials
Materials and Structures, 1994The paper presents the general theory of stresses and displacements in a two-dimensional cross-anisotropic disc subjected to two diametrically opposite loads. Such an indirect tensile test is often used for paving materials and this theory provides the necessary background for the determination of the stiffness, Poisson's ratio, and the anisotropy ...

Concrete mixes containing Reclaimed Asphalt Pavement (RAP) were evaluated by the Superpave® Indirect Tensile (IDT) strength test using a constant force-control and a displacement-control rate. The IDT strength of concrete without RAP at early age was seen to increase as the temperature decreased.

Using Indirect Tensile Cracking Test Data for Quality Control and Acceptance
Transportation Research Record: Journal of the Transportation Research Board, 2023The Virginia Department of Transportation currently requires the use of the indirect tensile cracking test (IDT-CT) in accordance with ASTM D8225 in its balanced mix design specifications to evaluate the cracking resistance of several unmodified dense-graded asphalt surface mixtures.

Evaluation of the indirect tensile stiffness modulus test
Sixth International RILEM Symposium on Performance Testing and Evaluation of Bituminous Materials, 2003In view to enhance in the field of characterization of asphalt mixes and to develop new test methods, RTE (the central laboratory of SCREG) has acquired a universal testing machine designed to conduct indirect tensile stiffness modulus testing. The interest of this technique is that it is time-saving compared to complex modulus and direct tension ...

Uniaxial compression tests and the validity of indirect tensile strength
Journal of Materials Science, 1990So-called “indirect” tensile tests have been adopted for various reasons, especially ease of execution and supposed freedom from several notable interferences. The extensive literature reveals much disparity in the conditions for such tests, and no consensus conclusion concerning the optimum protocol or even the interpretation of the results.

Measurement of Indirect Tensile Strength of Anisotropic Rocks by the Ring Test
Rock Mechanics and Rock Engineering, 2001This paper presents a new approach, combined with the Boundary Element Method (BEM) analysis and the diametrical compression on a thin disc with a small central hole, referred to as the ring test, for determining the indirect tensile strength of anisotropic rocks.
