Calpain small subunit homodimerization is robust and calcium‐independent

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Calpains dimerize via penta‐EF‐hand (PEF) domains. Using single‐molecule force spectroscopy, we measured the strength and kinetics of PEF–PEF homodimer binding. The interaction is robust, shows a transient conformational step before dissociation, and remains largely insensitive to Ca2+.

Revealing cross-national differences and similarities in relations between human values and climate policy support by Mixture Multigroup Structural Equation Modeling: a new tool for comparative research

open access: yesFrontiers in Political Science
With growing availability of large-scale international surveys, social scientists are increasingly interested in comparing relations among latent variables, such as values and attitudes, across countries using Multigroup or Multilevel Structural Equation

Individual Home Advantage with Individual Data

open access: yes, 2021
Home advantage (HA) is a well-documented phenomenon in (professional) team sports. However, there is also a growing body of evidence that in individual sports home athletes have an advantage. I define HA as ‘the performance advantage of an athlete, team, or country when they compete at a home ground compared to their performance under similar ...

Structural insights into an engineered feruloyl esterase with improved MHET degrading properties

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
A feruloyl esterase was engineered to mimic key features of MHETase, enhancing the degradation of PET oligomers. Structural and computational analysis reveal how a point mutation stabilizes the active site and reshapes the binding cleft, expading substrate scope.

Gut microbiome and aging—A dynamic interplay of microbes, metabolites, and the immune system

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Age‐dependent shifts in microbial communities engender shifts in microbial metabolite profiles. These in turn drive shifts in barrier surface permeability of the gut and brain and induce immune activation. When paired with preexisting age‐related chronic inflammation this increases the risk of neuroinflammation and neurodegenerative diseases.

Preprocessing Experience-Sampling-Method Data: A Step-by-Step Framework, Tutorial Website, R Package, and Reporting Templates

open access: yesAdvances in Methods and Practices in Psychological Science
Experience-sampling-method (ESM) studies have become a very popular tool to gain insight into the dynamics of psychological processes. Although the statistical modeling of ESM data has been widely studied, the preprocessing steps that precede such ...

Valosin‐containing protein counteracts ATP‐driven dissolution of FUS condensates through its ATPase activity in vitro

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Biomolecular condensates formed by fused in sarcoma (FUS) are dissolved by high ATP concentrations yet persist in cells. Using a reconstituted system, we demonstrate that valosin‐containing protein (VCP), an AAA+ ATPase, counteracts ATP‐driven dissolution of FUS condensates through its D2 ATPase activity.

Gaze cluster analysis reveals heterogeneity in attention allocation and predicts learning outcomes

open access: yesScientific Reports
Instructional videos need to maintain learners’ attention to foster learning, therefore, a fine-grained measurement of attention is required. Existing gaze measures like inter-subject correlation (ISC) assume a singular focal point deemed meaningful for ...
