Osmotically-induced and photo-induced deformations of disk membranes

Biochimica et Biophysica Acta (BBA) - Biomembranes, 1977
Abstract Effects of the osmotic pressure of suspending medium on the size and shape of isolated bovine rod outer segment disk membranes in the unbleached and bleached states were studied by elastic and quasielastic light scattering in dilute solutions of aqueous sucrose (0-0.1 wt.%). Data for the translational diffusion coefficients, D , and the

Influence of the induced membrane filled with syngeneic bone and regenerative cells on bone healing in a critical size defect model of the rat's femur.

Injury, 2018
INTRODUCTION The induced membrane technique for the treatment of large bone defects consists of a 2-stage procedure. In the first stage, a polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) cement spacer is inserted into the bony defect of a rat's femur and over a period of ...

Membrane-Induced Neutropenia

1984
A profound transient leucopenia occurs in all patients during the first hour of haemodialysis (Kaplow and Goffinet, 1968) and is manifested by an acute, rapidly reversible fall in white blood cell count, the nadir of which occurs 20 minutes after the start of dialysis and a return to pre-dialysis levels after about 1 h (Smith and Jobbins, 1969 ...

Managing large bone defects in children: a systematic review of the ‘induced membrane technique’

Journal of pediatric orthopedics. Part B, 2017
Thirty years after its description by Masquelet in 1986, this is the first systematic review aiming to critically evaluate the ‘induced membrane technique’ effectiveness in achieving bone union in children.

Hypoxia-induced remodelling of goldfish membranes

Comparative Biochemistry and Physiology Part B: Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, 2019
Hypoxia-tolerant animals use metabolic suppression as an essential strategy to survive low oxygen. Ectotherms can alter membrane lipid composition in response to changes in environmental temperature, but it is currently unknown whether chronic hypoxia can also elicit membrane restructuring.

Bilayer membrane destabilization induced by dolichylphosphate

Chemistry and Physics of Lipids, 1989
Small vesicles containing the fluorescent probe calcein were used to investigate the effect of dolichyl phosphate (Dol-P) on phospholipid bilayer stability. In the absence of Dol-P, phospholipid vesicles retained the fluorescent probe upon the addition of divalent cations.

Membrane Permeability and Oxidant Induced Injury

1988
This discussion concerns the mechanisms whereby cell functions are compromised by exposure to oxidant stress. One of our principal objectives is to also address the manner in which many of the studies of oxidant stress are performed, that being the use of lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) release as a marker of cell injury and use of millimolar and higher ...

Spontaneous and induced membrane hyperpolarizations in macrophages

Journal of Cellular Physiology, 1975
The electrophysiological properties of guinea pig peritoneal macrophages cultured in vitro were studied using standard intracellular recording techniques. The mean transmembrane potential, input resistance and time constant recorded from these cells were -13.1 mV, 143 Mohms, and 18 msec respectively.

Membrane-induced conformational change of proteins

Advances in Colloid and Interface Science, 2000
Many proteins exhibit both a water-soluble and a membrane-bound state. The proteins in the membrane-bound state obtain a distinct structure from that in the bulk, which exists in many important biological processes. In the present paper we would stress that the variation of the physical chemistry properties of the microenvironment adjacent to the ...
