Review on the possible tool materials for friction stir welding of steel plates [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
The friction stir welding (FSW) process is mainly used in industrial applications for joining low melting temperature materials such as aluminium and magnesium. FSW has many advantages in comparison with conventional fusion arc welding.

Scalable Thermal Engineering via Femtosecond Laser‐Direct‐Written Phononic Nanostructures

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, Volume 36, Issue 27, 2 April 2026.
This study demonstrates that femtosecond laser‐induced periodic surface structures (fs‐LIPSS) can function as phononic metasurfaces, reducing thermal conductivity below the plain thin‐film limit. Phonon Monte Carlo analysis reveals that the periodic structures restrict phonon mean free paths.

Characterization of crack nucleation in TA6V under fretting-fatigue loading using the potential drop technique [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
Crack initiation in a Ti-6Al-4V alloy was investigated experimentally in fretting fatigue conditions. A cylinder-plane geometry was used for the contact, and partial slip conditions were considered.

Uncovering the Impact of Homogenization and Dietary Fiber on the In Vitro Digestion of Cod Protein Composite Gel

open access: yesFood Safety and Health, Volume 4, Issue 2, Page 412-424, April 2026.
The cod protein composite gels produced through homogenization had excellent taste properties and met the requirements for Level 6—“soft and bite‐sized” of the International Dysphagia Diets Standardization Initiative Framework, making it suitable for individuals with special needs for food texture.

Hip Labral Reconstruction With a Synthetic Graft: Development and Preclinical Validation

open access: yesOrthopaedic Surgery, Volume 18, Issue 4, Page 791-800, April 2026.
Femoroacetabular impingement plays a prominent role in osteoarthritis pathogenesis. Treating FAI is fundamental, and labral reconstruction is considered the treatment of choice. A synthetic graft ready to be used in the surgical room for labral reconstruction, to best restore hip function, might be the solution.

Development of a novel cycling impact–sliding wear rig to investigate the complex friction motion

open access: yesFriction, 2017
In many industrial devices, impact-sliding wear is caused by a variety of complex vibrations between the contacted interfaces. Under actual conditions, impact and sliding motions do not occur in only one direction, and different complex impact-sliding ...

Ultra‐High Friction and Adhesion in Hydrogel Layer Driven by Wet‐to‐Dry Transition Dynamics

open access: yesAdvanced Science, Volume 13, Issue 15, 13 March 2026.
This work reveals a critical wet‐to‐dry transition in polyacrylamide hydrogel layers that induces volumetric shrinkage, resulting in enhanced interfacial contact and dramatically increased friction and adhesion. Leveraging this transition enables strong, reversible gripping on diverse surfaces, offering new insights for hydrogel‐based gripping ...
