Gyroscopes (hereafter abbreviated W gyro) and accelerometers are known as inertial sensors. This is because they exploit the property of inertia. namely the resistance to a change in momentum, to sense angular motion in the case of the gyro and changes in linear motion in the case of the accelerometer.

Human Activity Classification with Inertial Sensors
2014Monitoring human physical activity has become an important research area and is essential to evaluate the degree of functional performance and general level of activity of a person. The discrimination of daily living activities can be implemented with machine learning techniques.

Magnetohydrodynamic Angular Inertial Sensor
IEEE Transactions on Aerospace and Electronic Systems, 1966An angular acceleration sensor for control system stabilization is described. Magnetohydrodynamic principles are applied to develop a voltage in a toroid of mercury having a permanent magnet field and electrodes. The transfer function'is given by e/? = Ks2 /(s + 1/T).

Inertial Force Sensors — Accelerometers
1996This chapter introduces specific force sensors, or, as traditionally known in the technical literature, accelerometers. The subject is treated at both the sensor and the system level, that is, it considers both how, and what it measures on moving vehicles.

Calibration of Inertial Sensors
2000Abstract : The calibration of accelerometers, angular rate sensors, and inertial measurement units (IMU) increases the accuracy of their measurements. For artillery rounds and most rockets, measurements are acquired while the body is spinning. By the comparison of the sensor output to known input, calibration is accomplished.
