Zinc is essential for a wide variety of cellular processes in all cells. It is a critical dietary nutrient, particularly in the early stages of life. In the early neonatal period, adequate sources of zinc can be obtained from breast milk. In rare circumstances, the mammary gland produces zinc deficient milk that is potentially lethal for exclusively ...

LACTATION AND INFANT NUTRITION
British Medical Bulletin, 1981Lactation is of great importance to infant nutritional needs. It is difficult to generalize about infant growth expectations since there are variations among communities and since there may be some modification of infant feeding practices. The choice of an appropriate standard is even more difficult to estimate since they are interdependent on energy

Nutritional Nystagmus in Infants
Journal of Pediatric Ophthalmology & Strabismus, 1985ABSTRACT Two infants presented with acquired infantile nystagmus. On examination, they manifested peculiar facies, growth and developmental delay, failure to thrive, and a Wernicke's type of nystagmus. Suspicion of a ? vitamin deficiency resulted in correct diagnosis of dietary deficiency and/or enzymatic defect.

Infant Nutrition and Supplements
Journal of Obstetric, Gynecologic & Neonatal Nursing, 1985Today, American consumers believe they need more and better nutrients than their diets provide. Consequently, consumers spend approximately three billion dollars each year on vitamin and nutrition products. Parenteral nutrition in infants
Journal of Paediatrics and Child Health, 1980A prospective study of 63 consecutive infants on parenteral nutrition was undertaken to evaluate the effectiveness of a uniform regimen with minor modifications throughout the project. Routine investigations were carried out to monitor haematological and metabolic complications. Anaemia from repeated blood sampling was frequent. Metabolic complications

The nutrition of preterm infants
Early Human Development, 2012Although great efforts have been made to improve neonatal nutrition in very low birthweight (VLBW) infants, many do not receive adequate nutrient intake and thus develop extrauterine growth restriction. In order to minimize the interruption of nutrients that occurs at birth, an "aggressive" nutritional approach has been proposed.

Nutritional Needs of the Micropreterm Infant
The Journal of Pediatrics, 2013We have used an expansive definition of a micropreterm infant as 28 weeks' gestation are unlikely, on a theoretical basis, to meet nutritional requirements of micropreterm infants. Unfortunately, very few good quality studies have addressed the nutritional requirements of this group specifically; this makes it difficult to formulate solid, evidence ...
