In Detroit the most severe and rapidly fatal forms of infantile diarrhea begin to make their appearance about the third week of August, reach a peak during September and become less frequent in early October. In a prospective study, Shigella and Salmonella were recovered from only 3 per cent of infants hospitalized with severe diarrhea, compared to 12 per cent of infants with mild diarrhea and 21 per cent of older children with severe diarrhea.
