Strategies for controlling non-transmissible infection outbreaks using a large human movement data set [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
Prediction and control of the spread of infectious disease in human populations benefits greatly from our growing capacity to quantify human movement behavior.

Chicken Pulmonary MicroRNAs Targeting the PB2 (Segment 1) of Avian Influenza Virus

open access: yesAnimal Research and One Health, EarlyView.
The PB2 segment of H5N1 is essential for replication and host adaptation. We screened 200 miRNAs and identified five (gga‐miR‐17‐3p, gga‐miR‐29a‐5p, gga‐miR‐1718, gga‐miR‐16c‐5p, and gga‐miR‐1744‐5p) using thermodynamic stability of heteroduplex, seed sequence complementarity, conservation, and accessibility, offering insights into host antiviral ...

Heat Stress and Gut Microbiome Dynamics in Poultry: Interplay, Consequences, and Mitigation Strategies

open access: yesAnimal Research and One Health, EarlyView.
Heat stress disrupts gut microbial balance in poultry, impairing nutrient absorption and immunity. This review outlines the interplay between thermal stress and microbiome dynamics and discusses integrative mitigation strategies, probiotics, phytogenics, cooling systems, and genetic adaptation to enhance poultry resilience.

Applying implementation science to infectious disease emergency preparedness and response

open access: yesFrontiers in Public Health
Some infectious disease outbreaks present an emergency and a potential disaster scenario. Examples include a new virus similar to or more infectious and deadly than COVID-19 or Ebola, such as the 2025 MERS-like virus.

The aetiology of infectious intestinal disease in the community in Malta [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
Routine sources of data provide limited information on aetiological agents causing infectious intestinal disease (IID) in the community. A retrospective, age-stratified, cross-sectional, telephone study at community level was performed whereby identified

Investigating the Heat Stability and Inactivation Conditions of Decapod Iridescent Virus 1 (DIV1)

open access: yesAnimal Research and One Health, EarlyView.
Heat treatment effectively inactivates decapod iridescent virus 1 (DIV1) under milder conditions than current WOAH recommendations. DIV1 infectivity was eliminated at 56°C for 30 min, 60°C for 15 min, or 70°C for 1 min, providing optimized heat treatment strategies for aquaculture biosecurity and seafood safety.

Ancestral process for infectious disease outbreaks with superspreading

open access: yesJournal of Theoretical Biology
When an infectious disease outbreak is of a relatively small size, describing the ancestry of a sample of infected individuals is difficult because most ancestral models assume large population sizes. Given a set of infected individuals, we show that it is possible to express exactly the probability that they have the same infector, either inclusively (

Infectious Disease Outbreaks on Cruise Ships

open access: yesClinical Microbiology Newsletter, 2009
Abstract Leisure travel by sea has existed since antiquity. Today's cruise ships serve as a gathering place for people in every age group from different countries and cultures. The closed environment aboard cruise ships, close contact among passengers and crew, and common sources of food and water provide ample opportunity for exposure to and ...
