This study characterizes a multidrug‐resistant and strong biofilm‐forming Enterococcus faecalis strain obtained from a shrimp sample in Bangladesh. ABSTRACT Enterococcus faecalis is known for its ability to form strong biofilms and its role as an opportunistic pathogen. In this study, we screened and characterized a multidrug‐resistant (MDR) and strong

Staphylococcus Aureus AgrA Modulators from South African Antimicrobial Plants.
South African plants are an underutilized metabolites source for novel antimicrobials targeting key quorum sensing (QS) systems like the Staphylococcus aureus AgrA. AgrA modulating metabolites constitute a new approach to reducing resistance development.

TnSmu1 is an integrative and conjugative element (ICE) (a type of mobile element that is transferred from cell to cell via conjugation) found in the genome of the oral pathogen Streptococcus mutans. We found that TnSmu1 is a functional ICE, capable of transfer to recipient cells that lack a copy of TnSmu1.

Statistical implications of relaxing the homogeneous mixing assumption in time series Susceptible-Infectious-Removed models [PDF]
Infectious disease epidemiologists routinely fit stochastic epidemic models to time series data to elucidate infectious disease dynamics, evaluate interventions, and forecast epidemic trajectories. To improve computational tractability, many approximate stochastic models have been proposed. In this paper, we focus on one class of such approximations --

Compact pairwise models for epidemics with multiple infectious stages on degree heterogeneous and clustered networks [PDF]
This paper presents a compact pairwise model that describes the spread of multi-stage epidemics on networks. The multi-stage model corresponds to a gamma-distributed infectious period which interpolates between the classical Markovian models with exponentially distributed infectious period and epidemics with a constant infectious period.

ABSTRACT Severe tricuspid regurgitation (TR) is associated with significant morbidity and mortality. Management of severe TR includes treatment of the underlying cause(s), medical therapy and less commonly surgical tricuspid valve repair. Newer transcatheter tricuspid valve repair devices show promise for those patients who remain symptomatic with ...

ABSTRACT Background Transcatheter pulmonary valve replacement (TPVR) has emerged as a valuable treatment for severe pulmonary regurgitation (PR). The Salus valve (Balance Medical Technology Co. Ltd., Beijing, China) represents a novel self‐expanding valve stent designed for deployment through a transthoracic approach with a small subxiphoid incision ...

Prosthetic joint infection (PJI) caused by Coxiella burnetii is rare and has atypical clinical symptoms and can cause missed diagnosis. Molecular diagnostic techniques metagenomic next‐generation sequencing (mNGS) and pathogen‐targeted next‐generation sequencing (ptNGS) are important tools for diagnosing C.
