Assessing inference to the best explanation posteriors for the estimation of economic agent-based models [PDF]

open access: yesInternational Journal of Approximate Reasoning
Explanatory relationships between data and hypotheses have been suggested to play a role in the formation of posterior probabilities. This suggestion was tested in a toy environment and supported by simulations by David H. Glass.

Adaptationism and inference to the best explanation

Behavioral and Brain Sciences, 2002
Andrews et al. effectively argue that, despite prominent criticism, adaptationism can be a viable research strategy. We agree. In our complementary commentary, we discuss the neglected method of inference to the best explanation and argue that it is a valuable addition to the adaptationist's methodological practice.

Inference to the best explanation and mathematical realism

Synthese, 2006
Arguing for mathematical realism on the basis of Field’s explanationist version of the Quine–Putnam Indispensability argument, Alan Baker has recently claimed to have found an instance of a genuine mathematical explanation of a physical phenomenon. While I agree that Baker presents a very interesting example in which mathematics plays an essential ...

Inference to the Best Explanation

2016
Chapter 2 studies the problem of how to model evidential reasoning of the most common kind in criminal trials using the tools presented in Chap. 1. Chapter 2 analyzes two case studies of murder trials in which the evidential reasoning employed is based on inference to the best explanation and involves motive evidence.

Induction and inference to the best explanation

Philosophical Studies, 2012
In this paper I adduce a new argument in support of the claim that IBE is an autonomous (indispensable) form of inference, based on a familiar, yet surprisingly, under-discussed, problem for Hume’s theory of induction. I then use some insights thereby gleaned to argue for the (reductionist) claim that induction is really IBE, and draw some normative ...

Perception and inference to the best explanation

Journal for New Narratives in the History of Philosophy
Shepherd’s epistemology of perception starts off with a rigorous refutation of Hume’s scepticism concerning the senses in the essay “On the Academical or Sceptical Philosophy” (chaps. 1–3), the first of the Essays on the Perception of an External Universe published in 1827.
