Extrinsic innervation of the pelvic organs in the lesser pelvis of human embryos [PDF]

open access: yes, 2020
Realistic models to understand the developmental appearance of the pelvic nervous system in mammals are scarce. We visualized the development of the inferior hypogastric plexus and its preganglionic connections in human embryos at 4–8 weeks post ...

Inferior Hypogastric Plexus Blockade: A Transsacral Approach

open access: yesPain Physician, 2007
Background: Despite recent refinements in the technique of hypogastric plexus blockade, the lower pelvic organs and genitalia are innervated by fibers from the pre-sacral inferior hypogastric plexus and these fibers are not readily blocked using paravertebral or transdiscal approaches.

Level of Vascular Ligation for Sigmoid Colon Cancer: Does It Matter? The Pina Low‐T Study

open access: yesJournal of Surgical Oncology, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Background and Methods In sigmoid colon cancer surgery, the inferior mesenteric artery (IMA) can be ligated at its origin (high ligation, HLG) or distal to the left colic artery bifurcation (low ligation, LLG). While high ligation facilitates lymph node harvest and mobilization, it may compromise colonic perfusion and increase nerve injury ...

Pelvic Neuroanatomy in Colorectal Surgery: Advances in Nerve Preservation for Optimized Functional Outcomes

open access: yesSurgeries
Background: Pelvic autonomic nerve injury during colorectal surgery causes debilitating urinary, bowel, and sexual dysfunction. This review synthesizes contemporary evidence on neuroanatomy, nerve-sparing techniques, and functional outcomes to minimize ...

Impact of Abdominoperineal Resection on Postoperative Male Sexual Function After Minimally Invasive Rectal Cancer Surgery: A Subgroup Analysis From the LANDMARC Study

open access: yesAnnals of Gastroenterological Surgery, Volume 10, Issue 4, Page 1051-1065, July 2026.
Abdominoperineal resection (APR) after minimally invasive rectal cancer surgery was associated with significantly higher rates of erectile and early ejaculatory dysfunction compared with anal‐sparing surgery. Although ejaculatory function showed partial recovery over time, erectile dysfunction persisted up to 12 months postoperatively.

Layer by Layer: The Anatomical ‘Onion Peel’ Approach to Surgery Beyond Total Mesorectal Excision

open access: yesANZ Journal of Surgery, Volume 96, Issue 5, Page 1265-1269, May 2026.
ABSTRACT Background The global incidence of rectal cancer is rising, accompanied by the increasing use of neoadjuvant chemoradiotherapy. Although this approach improves oncological outcomes, it frequently increases operative difficulty during rectal resection.

Anatomy of the pelvic plexus and innervation of the prostate gland [PDF]

open access: yes, 2004
We have examined the anatomy of the pelvic (inferior hypogastric) plexus in six male cadavers, paying particular attention to gross anatomical landmarks that might aid in locating it and have used immunohistochemistry to study the small branches of the ...

Careful Dissection of the Distal Ureter Is Highly Important in Nerve-sparing Radical Pelvic Surgery: A 3D Reconstruction and Immunohistochemical Characterization of the Vesical Plexus [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
Radical hysterectomy with pelvic lymphadenectomy (RHL) is the preferred treatment for early-stage cervical cancer. Although oncological outcome is good with regard to recurrence and survival rates, it is well known that RHL might result in postoperative ...
