Informational Substitutes

open access: yes, 2017
We propose definitions of substitutes and complements for pieces of information ("signals") in the context of a decision or optimization problem, with game-theoretic and algorithmic applications.

Enteropathogenic E. coli shows delayed attachment and host response in human jejunum organoid‐derived monolayers compared to HeLa cells

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Enteropathogenic E. coli (EPEC) infects the human intestinal epithelium, resulting in severe illness and diarrhoea. In this study, we compared the infection of cancer‐derived cell lines with human organoid‐derived models of the small intestine. We observed a delayed in attachment, inflammation and cell death on primary cells, indicating that host ...

Connecting local structure to interface formation: a molecular scale van der Waals theory of nonuniform liquids

open access: yes, 2001
This article reviews a new and general theory of nonuniform fluids that naturally incorporates molecular scale information into the classical van der Waals theory of slowly varying interfaces.

Protein pyrophosphorylation by inositol pyrophosphates — detection, function, and regulation

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Protein pyrophosphorylation is an unusual signaling mechanism that was discovered two decades ago. It can be driven by inositol pyrophosphate messengers and influences various cellular processes. Herein, we summarize the research progress and challenges of this field, covering pathways found to be regulated by this posttranslational modification as ...

Networked Euler-Lagrangian Systems Synchronization under Time-Varying Communicating Delays

open access: yesInformation, 2019
This paper investigates the problem of the task-space synchronization control for networked Euler-Lagrange systems. In the considered systems, there are time-varying delays existing in the networking links and every subsystem contains uncertainties in ...

An upstream open reading frame regulates expression of the mitochondrial protein Slm35 and mitophagy flux

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
This study reveals how the mitochondrial protein Slm35 is regulated in Saccharomyces cerevisiae. The authors identify stress‐responsive DNA elements and two upstream open reading frames (uORFs) in the 5′ untranslated region of SLM35. One uORF restricts translation, and its mutation increases Slm35 protein levels and mitophagy.

Statistical properties of general Markov dynamical sources: applications to information theory [PDF]

open access: yesDiscrete Mathematics & Theoretical Computer Science, 2004
In Dynamical sources in information theory: fundamental intervals and word prefixes, B. Vallée studies statistical properties of words generated by dynamical sources. This is done using generalized Ruelle operators.

A General Divergence Measure for Monotonic Functions and Applications in Information Theory [PDF]

open access: yes, 2004
A general divergence measure for monotonic functions is introduced. Its connections with the f-divergence for convex functions are explored.

Subcycle squeezing of light from a time flow perspective

open access: yes, 2018
Light as a carrier of information and energy plays a fundamental role in both general relativity and quantum physics, linking these areas that are still not fully compliant with each other.

In situ molecular organization and heterogeneity of the Legionella Dot/Icm T4SS

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We present a nearly complete in situ model of the Legionella Dot/Icm type IV secretion system, revealing its central secretion channel and identifying new components. Using cryo‐electron tomography with AI‐based modeling, our work highlights the structure, variability, and mechanism of this complex nanomachine, advancing understanding of bacterial ...
