LUMINOUS INFRARED GALAXIES

Annual Review of Astronomy and Astrophysics, 1996
▪ Abstract  At luminosities above 1011 [Formula: see text], infrared galaxies become the dominant population of extragalactic objects in the local Universe (z ≲ 0.3), being more numerous than optically selected starburst and Seyfert galaxies and quasi-stellar objects at comparable bolometric luminosity.

Infrared Background from Seyfert Galaxies

Nature, 1970
Kleinmann and Low1 and Low2 have recently reported measurements of the infrared spectrum of the Seyfert galaxy NGC 1068. The spectrum was found to be sharply peaked at a wavelength of ∼100 µm (with an uncertainty of a factor of two or three toward longer wavelengths), while the total infrared luminosity amounts to L∼2.5 × 1046 erg s−1 (for a Hubble ...

Infrared Galaxies in Compact Groups

Astrophysics and Space Science, 2003
IR properties of Compact Group (CG) galaxies are presented and compared with IR properties of isolated galaxies. Despite CGs displaying more E-SOs and optically bright galaxies, no differences are retrieved concerning FIR emission. The observed lack of strong FIR enhancement in the CG sample is not surprising when interpreting FIR sources in CGs as ...

Ultraluminous Infrared Galaxies: Far-Infrared Highlights

Astrophysics and Space Science, 1999
We discuss two significant recent developments in the far-IRwith relevance to the study of Ultraluminous Infrared Galaxies(ULIRGs). The first of these is the discovery of an isotropiccosmological infrared background radiation (CIB). This has beendetected in observations by two different instruments (FIRAS (Puget etal. 1996, Hauser et al.

Ejection from Ultraluminous Infrared Galaxies

2000
Active galaxies, particularly Seyferts, have been shown to eject material in various forms including quasars with high intrinsic redshifts. A class of active galaxy which has so far not been analyzed from this standpoint is the so called Ultra Luminous Infrared Galaxies (ULRIG’s).

Starburst Galaxies: An Infrared Perspective

2005
The infrared regime is a key range for studies of starburst galaxies. It contains a rich variety of tracers of the gas, dust, and star-formation activity and enables us to probe deep into dust-enshrouded star-forming regions. Selected results based on diagnostics at near and mid-infrared wavelengths are highlighted.
