An infrared flash contemporaneous with the γ-rays of GRB 041219a [PDF]
The explosion that results in a cosmic gamma-ray burst (GRB) is thought to produce emission from two physical processes: the central engine gives rise to the high-energy emission of the burst through internal shocking, and the subsequent interaction of the flow with the external environment produces long-wavelength afterglows.

A Different Perspective on the Solid Lubrication Performance of Black Phosphorous: Friend or Foe?
Researchers investigate black phosphorous (BP) as a standalone solid lubricant coating through ball‐on‐disc linear‐reciprocating sliding experiments in dry conditions. Testing on different metals shows BP doesn't universally reduce friction and wear. However, it achieves 33% friction reduction on rougher iron surfaces and 23% wear reduction on aluminum.

Subdiffractional focusing and guiding of polaritonic rays in a natural hyperbolic material [PDF]
Uniaxial materials whose axial and tangential permittivities have opposite signs are referred to as indefinite or hyperbolic media. In such materials, light propagation is unusual leading to novel and often non-intuitive optical phenomena. Here we report

Heat transparent high intensity high efficiency solar cell [PDF]
An improved solar cell design is described. A surface of each solar cell has a plurality of grooves. Each groove has a vertical face and a slanted face that is covered by a reflecting metal.

Hot accretion flow in black hole binaries: a link connecting X-rays to the infrared [PDF]
Multiwavelength observations of Galactic black hole transients have opened a new path to understanding the physics of the innermost parts of the accr etion flows. While the processes giving rise to their X-ray continuum have been studied extensively, the

Gamma-ray burster counterparts - Infrared
The discovery of an IR counterpart to a gamma-ray burster (GRB) would be a big step forward in understanding this enigmatic phenomenon. A program of searching for IR emission from the smallest GRB source regions has been initiated. Seven boxes have been searched with ground-based telescopes at a wavelength of 2.2 microns and 23 with the IRAS data base ...

Coherent hard x-rays from attosecond pulse train-assisted harmonic generation
High-order harmonic generation from atomic systems is considered in the crossed fields of a relativistically strong infrared laser and a weak attosecond-pulse train of soft x-rays.
