Functional representation of inherent strains in fillet welds: Methods for estimation and measurement of residual stresses by functional representation of inherent strain distribution (4th report)

Welding International, 1995
Summary This paper describes application of the thermal elastic‐plastic FEM method to analyse three‐dimensional residual stresses in single‐pass and multi‐pass fillet welds. The inherent strains generated in the fillet welds are expressed by series functions with good accuracy.

Bending Angle Estimated Based on Inherent Strain Theory during Laser Forming

Materials Science Forum, 2010
Laser forming process analyzed under thermo-elasto-plastic finite element method can better understand the forming mechanism. However, it is very time consuming. This paper introduced the prediction of the deformation in laser forming based on the theory of inherent strain by finite element method (FEM). The relations between inherent strains and laser

Prediction of Residual Stresses in Butt Welded Plates Using Inherent Strains

Journal of Engineering Materials and Technology, 1993
The source of residual stresses in the vicinity of a weld may be expressed in terms of inherent strains. The characteristics of the inherent strain distributions in butt welds are investigated. It is found that the patterns vary little with changes in the welding conditions and sizes of the welded plates.

Inherent Strain Method for Residual Stress Measurement and Welding Distortion Prediction

Volume 9: Prof. Norman Jones Honoring Symposium on Impact Engineering; Prof. Yukio Ueda Honoring Symposium on Idealized Nonlinear Mechanics for Welding and Strength of Structures, 2016
Inherent strain method was employed to measure the distribution of three dimensional welding residual stresses in several multi-pass welded joints of thick pipes and thick cladded plates. Since a function expression approach to the distribution of inherent strains was developed, the measuring efficiency for three dimensional internal welding residual ...

Principal Deviatoric Strain Increment Ratios for Sand Having Inherent Transverse Isotropy

International Journal of Geomechanics, 2006
The behavior of sand on the π plane, including the relation between the principal deviatoric strain increment ratios, is not fully understood. The objectives are: To clarify experimentally the relation between the principal deviatoric strain increment ratios for sand in a wide range of b values and to discuss the basic shear behavior, taking particular

Research on Inherent Strain Distribution in Welded Low-Alloy Components

2014 Sixth International Conference on Measuring Technology and Mechatronics Automation, 2014
Inherent strain FEM is a recently developed numerical technique to forecast welding residual deformations. It makes use of the concept of inherent strain distribution to effectively reduce the analysis of the very complex highly nonlinear welding process to an equivalent linear elastic FEA, thus the computational cost could be significantly reduced. In

Welding strain analysis of friction stir-welded aluminum alloy structures using inherent strain-based equivalent loads

Journal of Mechanical Science and Technology, 2013
Friction stir welding is a solid-state welding method commonly used for aluminum alloy or lightweight metal. It has the advantages of low welding strain, high welding quality, and low residual welding stress while requiring no protection gas. Welding strain analysis of friction stir welding using finite element analysis has been the subject of many ...

Computational Welding Mechanics and Concept of Inherent Strain for Industrial Applications

Materials Science Forum, 2007
The distortion and the residual stress are the inevitable consequences of the welding and these may reduce the strength and the quality of the welded structures. To prevent the harmful influence of the welding distortion and the residual stress, their theoretical prediction is necessary.

Weld distortion prediction of the CFETR vacuum vessel by inherent strain theory

Fusion Engineering and Design, 2017
Abstract The CFETR (China Fusion Engineering Test Reactor) vacuum vessel sectors have high density welded joint, and as-welded size of the vacuum vessel is within a very tight tolerance, prediction of weld distortion is critical to allow the final assembly with the other components.
