Inherent Strain Method for Residual Stress Measurement and Welding Distortion Prediction

Volume 9: Prof. Norman Jones Honoring Symposium on Impact Engineering; Prof. Yukio Ueda Honoring Symposium on Idealized Nonlinear Mechanics for Welding and Strength of Structures, 2016
Inherent strain method was employed to measure the distribution of three dimensional welding residual stresses in several multi-pass welded joints of thick pipes and thick cladded plates. Since a function expression approach to the distribution of inherent strains was developed, the measuring efficiency for three dimensional internal welding residual ...

Functional representation of inherent strains in fillet welds: Methods for estimation and measurement of residual stresses by functional representation of inherent strain distribution (4th report)

Welding International, 1995
Summary This paper describes application of the thermal elastic‐plastic FEM method to analyse three‐dimensional residual stresses in single‐pass and multi‐pass fillet welds. The inherent strains generated in the fillet welds are expressed by series functions with good accuracy.

Research on Deformation Prediction Method of Laser Melting Deposited Large-Sized Parts Based on Inherent Strain Method

Key Engineering Materials, 2021
In the process of metal parts fabricated by Laser Melting Deposition (LMD), a high temperature gradient will generate due to the instantaneous high laser energy input, which will cause residual stress in the formed part of metal parts, the residual stress will result in defects like warping deformation or even cracking.

Iterative substructure method employing concept of inherent strain for large-scale welding problems

Welding in the World, 2014
When structures such as ships, automobiles, and bridges are assembled by welding, distortion and residual stress are produced as unavoidable consequence of local shrinkage due to welding. The dimensional error deteriorates the performance of the structures and becomes an obstacle to achieve smooth manufacturing if the error exceeds the tolerable limit.

Prediction of Butt Welding Deformation of Curved Shell Plates by Inherent Strain Method

Journal of Ship Production, 2002
In order to achieve high productivity of assembly blocks of hull structure, it is important to predict welding deformations accurately and to apply these data to the production planning. For this purpose the transient thermal-elastic-plastic analysis by FEM (finite-element method) may be utilized.

New Measuring Method of Axisymmetric Three-Dimensional Residual Stresses Using Inherent Strains as Parameters

Journal of Engineering Materials and Technology, 1986
For the measurement of axisymmetric three-dimensional residual stresses, Sachs’ method is often used. The accuracy of this method is not high when even small errors are contained in observed strains. In 1975, the authors presented a new approach for the measurement of residual stresses in which inherent strains (the source of residual stresses) are ...

Welding and Straightening Simulation of a Deckhouse Structure Using Linear Inherent Strain Method

2018
Welding is the most widely used assembly method available to industries in the construction of ships and offshore platforms. However, this method always produces a certain amount of distortion that will not only degrade the performance but also increase the building cost of the structure, and it should be straightened.
