The inherent strain method for simulation of additive manufacturing–A critical assessment based on a new variant of the method

open access: yesInternational Journal for Numerical Methods in Engineering, 2023
AbstractTo reduce computational time of thermo‐mechanical simulation of additive manufacturing processes, the inherent strain (IS) method is quite efficient, but suffers from a lack of predictivity, preventing concurrent quantitative prediction of distortion and stress.

Measurement of welding residual stresses of reactor vessels by inherent strain method – Diagnosis of inherent strain distribution function

Welding International, 2013
The fundamental objective of this study is to ensure the safety of nuclear reactors. A few accidents involving leaks from welded zones at the pipe penetration part of reactor vessels or at coolant pipes have been reported at home and abroad. One of the main causes is welding residual stress.

Inherent Strain Method and Thermal Elastic-Plastic Analysis of Welding Deformation of a Thin-Wall Beam

open access: yesJournal of Mechanics, 2008
The transient thermal process of a thin-wall beam with CO2Gas Metal Arc Welding (GMAW) is analyzed by Finite Element Analysis Method (FEA). The thermal input is simplified as transient section body heat sources and loaded as its actual sequence in the ...

Inherent Strain Method for Residual Stress Measurement and Welding Distortion Prediction

Volume 9: Prof. Norman Jones Honoring Symposium on Impact Engineering; Prof. Yukio Ueda Honoring Symposium on Idealized Nonlinear Mechanics for Welding and Strength of Structures, 2016
Inherent strain method was employed to measure the distribution of three dimensional welding residual stresses in several multi-pass welded joints of thick pipes and thick cladded plates. Since a function expression approach to the distribution of inherent strains was developed, the measuring efficiency for three dimensional internal welding residual ...
