Lateral instability of monosymmetric beams with initial curvature

Thin-Walled Structures, 1987
Abstract A theoretical study of the flexural-torsional, or lateral, instability of monosymmetric beams is presented. The analysis is based on beam theory and energy considerations and incorporates the influence of pre-buckling displacements and initial curvature in the plane of major axis bending.

Large deflexion of plates with initial curvature

International Journal of Mechanical Sciences, 1970
Abstract The dynamic relaxation method is used to study the large deflexion of plates with small initial curvature. Details of the numerical techniques are presented with special reference to the boundary conditions. The method is used to analyse the large deflexion of square plates with a lateral load on the concave face; the initial deflexions vary

Shock-Wave Curvature at Low Initial Pressure

The Physics of Fluids, 1961
The shape of the primary shock wave in a shock tube has been measured by recording the time of arrival of the shock in argon at an array of piezoelectric detectors located along a diameter of a 28.6-mm i.d. shock tube operated at an initial expansion chamber pressure of 0.34 mm Hg.

On the effect of initial curvature on cracked flat sheets

International Journal of Fracture Mechanics, 1969
A survey of existing solutions describing the stress distribution around the crack tip of an initially curved sheet is made and a method for estimating approximate stress intensity factors of other more complicated shell geometries is discussed.

EFFECT OF MEMBER INITIAL CURVATURE ON A FLEXIBLE MECHANISM RESPONSE

Journal of Sound and Vibration, 1996
A co-rotational finite element formulation of slender curved beam element is presented to investigate the effect of member initial curvature on the dynamic behaviour of planar flexible mechanisms. The Euler-Bernoulli hypothesis and the initial curvature are properly considered for the kinematics of curved beam.

Pure bending of beams having initial curvature

The Aeronautical Journal, 1974
Three theories of bending are available to the designer for the determination of bending stresses in curved beams. (1) The Euler-Bernoulli hypothesis (often referred to as the simple theory of bending), which assumes a linear distribution of bending stress, having a zero stress value at the mid-plane, i.e. the centroidal and neutral axes are coincident.

Tristability of thin orthotropic shells with uniform initial curvature

Proceedings of the Royal Society A: Mathematical, Physical and Engineering Sciences, 2008
Composite shells show a rich multistable behaviour of interest for the design of shape-changing (morphing) structures. Previous studies have investigated how the initial shape determines the shell stability properties. For uniform initial curvatures and orthotropic material behaviour, not more than two stable equilibria have been reported.

Effects of initial shapes on the natural frequencies of a beam with initial curvature and axial constraints

Mechanics Research Communications, 1994
The linearized equation of motion in matrix form of an Euler-Bernoulli beam with initial curvature is derived based on the Lagrangian approach and the assumed mode method. The partial axial constraint is imposed in the form of a linear spring at one end of the beam, modeling the relative axial mobility of the two supports.

Flat Flexural Vibration of Drill-String with an Initial Curvature

2016
Drill-string vibration is one of the major causes for a deteriorated drilling performance. It is crucial to understand the complex vibrational mechanisms experienced by a drilling system in order to better control its functional operation and improve its performance. This work is devoted to modeling of nonlinear dynamics of the drill-string taking into

Effect of initial curvature in uniform flexures on position accuracy

Mechanism and Machine Theory, 2018
Abstract Position accuracy is a prerequisite for compliant mechanisms, especially in micro-scale applications. Generally, this feature depends on the flexures ability to imitate the revolute joints of the pseudo-rigid body model. In case of flexible elements, the center of the relative rotation varies its position during the deflections, affecting ...
