Influence of initial curvature on micromachined thermal bimorph actuation

SPIE Proceedings, 2001
While the micro bimorph structures are fabricated with enough initial curvatures or so-called geometrical imperfections, structural instability may occur to result in snap-through behaviors and exhibit large deflection strokes. The bimorph structures with various initial deflections ratios and various heating area ratios are simulated and fabricated to

Curvature estimation for multilayer hinged structures with initial strains

Journal of Applied Physics, 2003
Closed-form estimate of curvature for hinged multilayer structures with initial strains is developed. The finite element method is used for modeling of self-positioning microstructures. The geometrically nonlinear problem with large rotations and large displacements is solved using step procedure with node coordinate update.

The bending of a thin rod having initially uniform curvature

International Journal of Mechanical Sciences, 1963
Abstract A relation is established between the forms of the elastica obtained when equal and opposite forces are applied to a slender elastic rod having initially the form of a circular arc. Sets of curves are obtained which demonstrate the manner in which several mathematical forms may be involved in a single instance.

On the Bending of Rectangular Orthotropic Plates with Small Initial Curvature

The Journal of the Royal Aeronautical Society, 1964
Bending analysis of rectangular orthotropic plates due to lateral loads has been considered by many writers. A small initial curvature has no effect on the bending of a plate due to the action of a lateral load, and the final deflection curve may be obtained by superposing the ordinates due to the initial curvature on the deflections calculated as for ...

Study on Rescaling Extrinsic Curvature in Gravitational Initial Data

2015
Vacuum solutions to the Einstein equations can be viewed as the interplay between the geometry and the gravitational wave energy content. The constraints on initial data reflect this interaction. We assume we are looking at cosmological solutions to the Einstein equations so we assume that the 3-space is compact, without boundary.

The design of reinforced concrete beams of large initial curvature

Magazine of Concrete Research, 1953
Summary When the initial curvature of a reinforced concrete section is large in comparison with its depth, the stress can no longer be assumed to increase linearly outwards from the “gravity”* axis and, as a result, the neutral axis is displaced towards the centre of curvature.

Initial curvature effect on the behaviour of cylindrical shell structures

2010
This paper focuses on the static behaviour of cylindrical shells and takes the initial curvature ef-fect into account. The First-order Shear Deformation Theory (FSDT) is used to analyze the above-mentioned moderately thick structural element. The treatment is developed within the theory of linear elasticity, when the material is assumed to be isotropic
