Initiation of dendrites by crystal imperfections

Metallurgical Transactions, 1970
The development of dendrites from an initially flat, stationary solid/liquid interface in a transparent material was observed and photographed. It was found that the dendrites originated from preferred areas on the interface immediately adjacent to grain boundaries, subboundaries, and trapped foreign particles.

Investigations of initial imperfections of steel scaffold structures

ce/papers, 2021
AbstractAnalysis and design of structures sensitive to second order effects require to take into account initial imperfections. Scaffold structures, due to their low rigidity, are very sensitive to second order effects. The accuracy of the design of such structures is based in part on the estimation of initial imperfections affecting the structure.

Statistics of normally distributed initial imperfections

International Journal of Solids and Structures, 1993
This paper offers a theoretical study on the probabilistic nature of critical loads (buckling loads) of structures subject to normally distributed initial imperfections. Explicit forms of probability density function of critical loads are derived for various types of critical points.

Critical Initial Imperfection (II)

2002
The critical load of a structural system undergoing bifurcation is highly sensitive to initial imperfections. In the design of such a system, it is preferable to consider the “worst” or, in other words, the “most detrimental” imperfection that reduces the critical load most rapidly.

Random Initial Imperfection (I)

2002
Cylindrical shells may be quoted as one of the most famous D n -symmetric (or, to be precise, D∞-symmetric) systems subject to strength variation due to initial imperfections. The initial imperfection data bank has been developed by measuring the initial imperfections of shells (Singer, Abramovich, and Yaffe, 1978 [168]; Arbocz and Abramovich, 1979 [4])

Measurement of the geometric initial imperfections in diaphragms

Thin-Walled Structures, 1992
Abstract A method, using a new surveying technique, is used for the measurement of the geometric initial imperfections in box girder diaphragms. The method, accurate to ±0·1 mm , may be used on diaphragms contained in a box girder where contact with the surface of the diaphragm is difficult or impossible or inadvisable due to the presence of ...

Effect of Initial Imperfections on the Instability of a Ring Confined in an Imperfect Rigid Boundary

Journal of Applied Mechanics, 1967
The stability of a radially constrained, complete, circular ring subjected to thermal stress and of a similarly restrained portion of a circular ring under circumferential end load is investigated. The effect of three types of initial geometric imperfections on the buckling behavior is determined. Results obtained, employing shallow arch approximations,

Stability of Stiffened Plates with Initial Imperfections

Journal of Engineering Mechanics, 2003
An experimental study of the effect of plate slenderness ratio and column slenderness ratio on the collapse load of simply supported stiffened plates with initial imperfections, loaded in compression, is presented. A generalized computer program for the semiempirical solutions based on the strut approach and the orthotropic plate approach is developed.

Non-linear vibration of initially stressed plates with initial imperfections

Thin-Walled Structures, 2005
Non-linear partial differential equations of vibration for isotropic plates having initial imperfection are derived. The derivation based on the classical plate theory aims to describe non-linear vibration of imperfect plates in a general state of arbitrary initial stresses.

Analysis of stability on elastic plates with initial imperfections

Applied Mathematics and Mechanics, 1995
Using the Marguerre equations, the author considers the influence of initial deflection, imperfection and transverse loading on the critical load for an elastic plate. The results are obtained using an asymptotic theory, and the solutions are applicable only in a neighborhood of the bifurcation point. Some post-critical paths are obtained for imperfect
