Structural and functional characterization of chitinase from carnivorous plant Drosera adelae

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
A class I chitinase from the carnivorous plant Drosera adelae was expressed and purified using a yeast system, revealing high enzymatic activity. Structural analyses of the catalytic and chitin‐binding domains identified key tyrosine residues involved in substrate binding, offering insights into the enzyme's adaptation for insect digestion.

The prey species and kleptoparasites of Trichodes crabroniformis (Coleoptera, Cleridae) – an active predator on flower-visiting insects in Bulgaria [PDF]

open access: yesTravaux du Muséum National d’Histoire Naturelle “Grigore Antipa”
Feeding of Trichodes crabroniformis (Fabricius, 1787) on insects from 10 families, belonging to orders Coleoptera, Hymenoptera and Hemiptera is documented under field conditions in Bulgaria. Cases of attacks on longhorn beetles of the species Echinocerus

Rethinking plastic waste: innovations in enzymatic breakdown of oil‐based polyesters and bioplastics

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Plastic pollution remains a critical environmental challenge, and current mechanical and chemical recycling methods are insufficient to achieve a fully circular economy. This review highlights recent breakthroughs in the enzymatic depolymerization of both oil‐derived polyesters and bioplastics, including high‐throughput protein engineering, de novo ...

Wolbachia and DNA barcoding insects: patterns, potential and problems [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
Wolbachia is a genus of bacterial endosymbionts that impacts the breeding systems of their hosts. Wolbachia can confuse the patterns of mitochondrial variation, including DNA barcodes, because it influences the pathways through which mitochondria are ...

Physiological adaptations to sugar‐mimic alkaloids: Insights from Bombyx mori for long‐term adaption and short‐term response

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, 2020
Insects evolved adaptive plasticity to minimize the effects of the chemical defenses of their host plants. Nevertheless, the expressional response and adaptation of phytophagous specialists for long‐term adaption and short‐term response to host ...

Different trophic positions among social vespid species revealed by stable isotopes

open access: yesRoyal Society Open Science, 2021
The social vespid wasps are common insect predators and several species behave in unison in the same biotopes. It is commonly accepted that social wasps are mainly opportunistic generalist predators without differences in prey selection and hence they ...
