DNA‐Templated 2D Heterostructures as Phototriggered Dynamic Nanohybrids: From Releasing Molecular Loads to Controlling Enzyme Biocatalytic Function

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
DNA strands are employed both as dynamic linkers and nanoscale templates for the integration of Ag2S nanoparticles on MoS2, which in turn imparted photothermal responsiveness; this feature permits the selective cargo (fluorophore, quantum dots or an enzyme) release from the MoS2 surface in response to local heat induced by light irradiation.

Extraction of chrysanthemum oil to produce organic insect repellent [PDF]

open access: yesE3S Web of Conferences
Commercial repellent treatments incorporating plant-based components have recently gained favourable among users due to the fact They are considered “safe” in compared to long-established synthetic repellents however, this is usually not accurate.

Structure Formation in Butterfly Scales: Interplay of Genetic Control, Mechanical Instabilities, and Dynamic Material Properties

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Butterfly wing scales are intricate cuticular functional nanosctructures. This perspective suggests that spatially varying material properties, cytoskeletal constraints, and growth‐driven mechanical instabilities shape the resulting nanoscale architectures created from single cells.

Evidence for inhibition of cholinesterases in insect and mammalian nervous systems by the insect repellent deet

open access: yesBMC Biology, 2009
Background N,N-Diethyl-3-methylbenzamide (deet) remains the gold standard for insect repellents. About 200 million people use it every year and over 8 billion doses have been applied over the past 50 years.

Chirality Transfer via Orientational Order of Micellar Assemblies on Gold Nanocrystals

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
A mechanism for chiral growth of Au nanocrystals mediated by orientational order of chiral micelles at seed surfaces is demonstrated. 3D electron microscopy and molecular dynamics simulations reveal how alignment of the micelles along crystal directions and torsion–orientation coupling govern chirality transfer, providing a framework to rationalize ...

3D‐Printing Aided Rapid Prototyping of Pretensioned Tensegrity Structures for Robotic Applications

open access: yesAdvanced Robotics Research, EarlyView.
Printing, injection molding, and assembly (PMA) is a method for rapid prototyping mesoscale, topologically complex, and tensioned tensegrity structures. In combination with PMA method, two mold design strategies: modular mold and compact channel layout, enable efficiency and scalability for tensegrity fabrication.

Conservation of Olfactory Avoidance in Drosophila Species and Identification of Repellents for Drosophila suzukii. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
Flying insects use olfaction to navigate towards fruits in complex odor environments with remarkable accuracy. Some fruits change odor profiles substantially during ripening and related species can prefer different stages.
