Cell‐cycle‐specific lesion evolution rather than inhibition of double‐strand‐break repair underpins cisplatin radiosensitization

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
We analyze cisplatin–DNA adducts (CDAs) and double‐strand breaks (DSBs) in a cell‐cycle‐dependent manner. We find that CDAs form similarly across all cell cycle phases. DSBs arise only in S‐phase. CDAs might not directly impair DSB repair, but S‐phase DSB lesions evolve in the presence of CDAs and disrupt repair in G2, also causing radiosensitization ...

Study on Rockburst Nucleation Process of Deep-Buried Tunnels Based on Microseismic Monitoring

open access: yesShock and Vibration, 2015
The objective of this study was to investigate the rockburst nucleation process and provide a theoretical basis for its prediction. A microseismic monitoring system was established in deep tunnels at Jinping II Hydropower Station.

Numerical Shear Tests on the Scale Effect of Rock Joints under CNL and CND Conditions

open access: yesAdvances in Civil Engineering, 2020
The scale effect of rock joint shear behavior is an important subject in the field of rock mechanics. There is yet a lack of consensus regarding whether the shear strength of rock joints increases, decreases, or remains unchanged as the joint size ...

Small Structures via Thermal Instability of Partially Ionized Plasma. I. Condensation Mode

open access: yes, 2007
(Shortened) Thermal instability of partially ionized plasma is investigated by linear perturbation analysis. According to the previous studies under the one fluid approach, the thermal instability is suppressed due to the magnetic pressure.

Rethinking plastic waste: innovations in enzymatic breakdown of oil‐based polyesters and bioplastics

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Plastic pollution remains a critical environmental challenge, and current mechanical and chemical recycling methods are insufficient to achieve a fully circular economy. This review highlights recent breakthroughs in the enzymatic depolymerization of both oil‐derived polyesters and bioplastics, including high‐throughput protein engineering, de novo ...

Sustainable bioplastics manufacturing from renewable sources

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Bioplastics are manufactured by using polymers from different bio‐based sources. These novel materials not only offer biodegradability but also possess various functional properties that make them suitable for diverse applications. Recent developments in the preparation of bioplastics are reported, highlighting the distinct properties of each type of ...

Transverse instability of dunes

open access: yes, 2011
The simplest type of dune is the transverse one, which propagates with invariant profile orthogonally to a fixed wind direction. Here we show numerically and with a linear stability analysis that transverse dunes are unstable with respect to along-axis ...

dUTPase is essential in zebrafish development and possesses several single‐nucleotide variants with pronounced structural and functional consequences

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
dUTPases are involved in balancing the appropriate nucleotide pools. We showed that dUTPase is essential for normal development in zebrafish. The different zebrafish genomes contain several single‐nucleotide variations (SNPs) of the dut gene. One of the dUTPase variants displayed drastically lower protein stability and catalytic efficiency as compared ...

The Instability of Instability

open access: yes, 1991
Democratic simple majority voting is perhaps the most widely used method of group decision making in our time. Current theory, based on instability theorems, predicts that a group employing this method will almost always fail to reach a stable conclusion.

Critical roles of Dpb3-Dpb4 sub-complex of DNA polymerase epsilon in DNA replication, genome stability, and pathogenesis of Candida albicans

open access: yesmBio
DNA polymerase ε (Polε) is an essential replicative polymerase consisting of Pol2, Dpb2, Dpb3, and Dpb4 subunits and has not been explored in the pathogenic yeast Candida albicans. C. albicans is accountable for >40% of deaths due to systemic candidiasis
