Spectroscopic analysis of DA white dwarfs from the McCook & Sion catalog [PDF]

open access: yes, 2008
For some years now, we have been gathering optical spectra of DA white dwarfs in an effort to study and define the empirical ZZ Ceti instability strip. However, we have recently expanded this survey to include all the DA white dwarfs in the McCook & Sion

Identifying High‐Impact Solutions to Address Racial and Ethnic Health Disparities in Lupus: A Consensus‐Based Approach

open access: yesArthritis Care &Research, EarlyView.
Objective We conducted formative research aimed at identifying solutions that address inequitable health outcomes in lupus due to adverse social determinants of health (SDoH). Methods We conducted a search for keywords, which provided insights into potential solutions and initiatives underway. An advisory panel of lupus experts iteratively reviewed the

Onset of dendritic flux avalanches in superconducting films

open access: yes, 2006
We report a detailed comparison of experimental data and theoretical predictions for the dendritic flux instability, believed to be a generic behavior of type-II superconducting films.

Addressing Economic Insecurities Can Improve Patient‐Reported Outcomes in Lupus

open access: yesArthritis Care &Research, Accepted Article.
Background Economic insecurities, such as food, housing, transportation, and financial challenges, are modifiable risk factors and influence patient‐reported outcomes (PROs) in systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). We examined: 1) associations between economic insecurities and PROs; 2) the impact of screening and addressing economic insecurities during ...

Are the stars of a new class of variability detected in NGC~3766 fast rotating SPB stars? [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
A recent photometric survey in the NGC~3766 cluster led to the detection of stars presenting an unexpected variability. They lie in a region of the Hertzsprung-Russell (HR) diagram where no pulsation are theoretically expected, in between the $\delta ...

Anisotropic rupture of polymer strips driven by Rayleigh instability [PDF]

open access: yesThe Journal of Chemical Physics, 2006
We demonstrate that the separated polymer strips of micro- and sub-micro-length-scales rupture anisotropically along the strip direction, resulting in the formation of distinctly observable, regularly spaced polymer drops. The wavelength of the polymer drops and the surface tension dependence of the rupture behavior are found to be well represented by ...

Adaptable Tile‐Based Pneumatic Origami through Structurally Coupled Localized Actuation

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
This article presents tile‐based pneumatic origami structures with rigid tiles and flexible fabric creases, achieving adaptable properties including morphing shape, selective multistability, and tunable stiffness. Independently pressurized folding bladders at each crease enable structurally coupled localized actuation of origami structures.

The Hot Limit of Solar-like Oscillations From Kepler Photometry

open access: yesFrontiers in Astronomy and Space Sciences, 2020
Kepler short-cadence photometry of 2,347 stars with effective temperatures in the range 6,000–10,000 K was used to search for the presence of solar-like oscillations.
