Death by a Thousand Ants: Predation on Grasshoppers by Invasive Ants in a Grassland

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, Volume 15, Issue 12, December 2025.
Invasive ants are known to disrupt litter‐dwelling arthropod communities, but their impacts on large, mobile aboveground insects are less clear. We document predation by the invasive tawny crazy ant (Nylanderia fulva) on adult grasshoppers in a coastal tallgrass prairie, where nearly half of tethered individuals were killed within 24 h, and stable ...

The Complete Mitochondrial Genome of the Pest Beetle Latheticus oryzae: Assembly, Annotation, and Phylogenetic Analysis

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, Volume 15, Issue 12, December 2025.
This study presents the first complete mitochondrial genome of the stored grain pest Latheticus oryzae, which is 15,798 bp long and exhibits a typical insect mitogenome structure with high A + T content. Phylogenetic analysis confirms its close relationship to Tribolium species within the Tenebrionini tribe.

Soldier Production Strategy in Lower Termites: From Young Instars or Old Instars?

Journal of Theoretical Biology, 2002
We constructed a mathematical model to explain from which instars soldiers should be produced to maximize the growth rate of a termite colony. The model is based on the demography of the lower termite's colony: many of them feed inside the nest. The model predicts the following: (1) When the colony is young (it still has enough food and needs a high ...

Instar and outstar learning with memristive nanodevices

Nanotechnology, 2010
The instar and outstar synaptic models are among the oldest and most useful in the field of neural networks. In this paper we show how to approximate the behavior of instar and outstar synapses in neuromorphic electronic systems using memristive nanodevices and spiking neurons. Memristive nanodevices are especially attractive for this application since
