Fracture, friction and granular simulation [PDF]

open access: yes, 2009
textThis thesis contains three separate yet closely related topics: fracture, friction and simulation of mechanical response of a confined granular medium. The first two are experimental investigations and the last one is a numerical study.

Microstructural, Mechanical, and Textural Evolution of Dissimilar Combination of Laser‐Welded Maraging Steel and 4340 Steel

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
The present work reports the microstructural, mechanical, and texture evolution of a dissimilar combination laser‐welded maraging steel with 4340 steel. This is important for aerospace applications. The demand for dissimilar welding is growing rapidly with the requirement of efficient and durable joints.

Enhancing Low‐Temperature Performance of Sodium‐Ion Batteries via Anion‐Solvent Interactions

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
DOL is introduced into electrolytes as a co‐solvent, increasing slat solubility, ion conductivity, and the de‐solvent process, and forming an anion‐rich solvent shell due to its high interaction with anion. With the above virtues, the batteries using this electrolyte exhibit excellent cycling stability at low temperatures. Abstract Sodium‐ion batteries

Self‐Sintering Ionogel Binder for Flexible, Recyclable, and Healable Printed Giant Magnetoresistive Sensors

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Electronic waste has emerged as a major environmental challenge, driven by the massive consumption and a limited lifetime of modern electronic devices, stimulating the development of sustainable electronics. Here, an all‐biomaterial gelatin‐choline‐citric acid ([Ch][CA]) ionogel is developed as an active binder to realize self‐sintered ...

Electrospun Wood‐Derived Biopolymers as Electrodes in Electrochemical Energy Storage Technologies

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Electrospinning transforms wood‐derived cellulose and lignin into architecturally defined, binder‐free carbon electrodes with tuneable porosity and functionality. This review shows how fibre design enables decoupled charge and mass transport, enhancing performance across battery systems, while identifying key challenges in spinnability, scalability ...

Biomineral‐Inspired Organic/Inorganic Colloidal Liquid‐Crystalline Hybrids for Photoresponsive Adhesion

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
A new class of photoresponsive liquid‐crystalline (LC) adhesives based on biomineral‐inspired organic/inorganic colloidal hybrids is reported. These colloidal LC materials are formed by hybridization of a hydroxyapatite nanorod with azobenzene‐based forklike molecules.

Coordinated Architectural and Chemical Reinforcement in the Crushing Mandible of a Soldier Termite

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
The crushing mandible of a soldier termite withstands substantial biting loads despite lacking mineral. Its cuticle is partitioned: convex teeth pair hardness and zinc enrichment with aligned chitin fibers for contact durability, while stiffer concave regions between teeth carry bending loads.

Clinical and Instrumental Diagnosis of Fractures of the Proximal Tibial Epimetaphyseal Fractures

open access: yesFamily medicine. European practices
Proximal tibial epimetaphyseal fractures account for 8.9 to 11% of all fractures of the tibia and up to 87% of all fractures of the knee joint. In this group, lateral condyle fractures occur in 52–80% of cases, medial condyle fractures – up to 7%, and multifragmentary fractures – in 41% of patients.
