Feedhorn-Coupled TES Polarimeters for Next-Generation CMB Instruments

AIP Conference Proceedings, 2009
The next generation of cosmic microwave background (CMB) polarization experiments targeting the signatures of inflation will require unprecedented sensitivities in addition to careful control of systematics. With existing detector technologies approaching the photon noise limit, improvements in system sensitivities must come from ever‐larger focal ...

Multislit spectro-polarimeter: a facility instrument for the Multiapplication Solar Telescope

Journal of Astronomical Telescopes, Instruments, and Systems, 2019
The multislit spectro-polarimeter (MSSP) is a grating-based littrow spectrograph with five slits at the entrance aperture. The polarimeter consists of a nematic liquid crystal variable retarder as the modulator and a Savart plate as an analyzer.

Millipol, a millimeter/submillimeter wavelength polarimeter - Instrument, operation, and calibration

Publications of the Astronomical Society of the Pacific, 1990
An instrument capable of measuring the polarization characteristics of weakly polarized, cold dust at millimeter and submillimeter wavelengths is presented in detail. The operation and calibration of this polarimeter at a wavelength of 1300 microns, configured for the NRAO 12-meter telescope, are discussed.

Instrument simulation for estimating uncertainties in imaging polarimeters

Optical Engineering, 2006
Remote sensing of the polarized light emitted or reflected from a scene has the potential to improve object detection, object identification, or to enhance images. The need to accurately measure individual Stokes components depends on the application. In all applications, it is desirable to estimate the uncertainty associated with Stokes images.

The Diffraction Limited Spectro-Polarimeter: a new instrument for high-resolution solar polarimetry

SPIE Proceedings, 2004
The National Solar Observatory in collaboration with the High-Altitude Observatory is developing a new solar polarimeter, the Diffraction Limited Spectro-Polarimeter. In conjunction with a new high-order adaptive optics system at the NSO Dunn Solar Telescope, the DLSP design facilitates very high angular resolution observations of solar vector ...

Optical efficiency of feedhorn-coupled TES polarimeters for next-generation CMB instruments

SPIE Proceedings, 2010
The next generation of Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) experiments probing for signals of inflation and small angular scale polarization anisotropies require higher sensitivity and better control of systematics. We are developing monolithic arrays of orthomode transducer (OMT) coupled transition edge sensor (TES) polarimeters designed for ...

Characterization of Detectors and Instrument Systematics for the SPIDER CMB Polarimeter

2014
We know from the CMB and observations of large-scale structure that the universe is extremely flat, homogenous, and isotropic. The current favored mechanism for generating these characteristics is inflation, a theorized period of exponential expansion of the universe that occurred shortly after the Big Bang.

Characterization of Instrument Effects in Imaging and Non-Imaging Polarimeters

2004
Abstract : The purpose of this one-year effort was to identify and investigate some important effects that the optical systems have on the performance of imaging and non-imaging polarimeters. During our period of performance we concentrated on two primary areas; 1) Characterization of the effects of systematic errors in the polarization optics of non ...

The hyperspectral polarimeter for aerosol retrievals (HySPAR): a new instrument for passive remote sensing of aerosols

IEEE Worshop on Remote Sensing of Atmospheric Aerosols, 2005., 2005
Aerodyne Research has developed and built a snap-shot imaging spectropolarimeter for aerosol retrievals, based on our patented polarimetric spectral intensity modulation (PSIM) technique. The resulting sensor, the Hyperspectral Polarimeter for Aerosol Retrievals (HySPAR), is capable of capturing, in a single snapshot, a full elliptical Stokes spectrum ...
