Random levels of growth hormone (GH) are usually not helpful in diagnosing either GH deficiency or GH hypersecretion because GH is secreted in a pulsatile fashion. Insulin-like growth factor I (IGF-I), however, is a good indicator of GH secretion and action, particularly at the level of the liver.
