The Mixed Blessings of Pragmatism. Jean-Baptiste Dumas and the (Al)chemical Quest for Metallic Transmutation

open access: yesSubstantia, 2023
There were at least three prerequisites for the transmutability of metals to become once again a scientifically acceptable subject of research from the 1810s: new hypotheses concerning the mutual reducibility of certain elements, such as those of ...

Record statistics in integer compositions [PDF]

open access: yesDiscrete Mathematics & Theoretical Computer Science, 2009
A $\textit{composition}$ $\sigma =a_1 a_2 \ldots a_m$ of $n$ is an ordered collection of positive integers whose sum is $n$. An element $a_i$ in $\sigma$ is a strong (weak) $\textit{record}$ if $a_i> a_j (a_i \geq a_j)$ for all $j=1,2,\ldots,i-1$. Furthermore, the position of this record is $i$. We derive generating functions for the total number of

Integer Subspace Differential Privacy

open access: yes, 2023
We propose new differential privacy solutions for when external invariants and integer constraints are simultaneously enforced on the data product.

Symbolic Regression and Multi‐Objective Optimization of the Flory–Huggins Interaction Parameter for Hydrogels

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
We develop a data‐driven method to derive the mathematical expressions of the Flory–Huggins interaction parameter χ for the swelling behavior of temperature–responsive hydrogels. Starting from initial assumptions of χ, our workflow combines Bayesian optimization, Flory–Rehner theory, and symbolic regression to generate candidate χ expressions.

ORDINATION OF THE MAIN PARAMETERS OF FAÇADE FORMS

open access: yesАрхитектон, 2021
The article is a search for applications for Rene Descartes theory of graphic representation of numbers to the analysis of proportional construction of façade compositions in classicist architecture.

Binary positive semidefinite matrices and associated integer polytopes [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
We consider the positive semidefinite (psd) matrices with binary entries, along with the corresponding integer polytopes. We begin by establishing some basic properties of these matrices and polytopes.

A Lightweight Procedural Layer for Hybrid Experimental–Computational Workflows in Materials Science

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
We unveil a prototype hybrid‐workflow framework that fuses automatedcomputation with hands‐on experiments. Built atop pyiron, a lightweight, parameterized layer translates procedure descriptions into executable manual steps, syncing instrument settings, human interventions, and data capture in real‐time today.

Self-Commutators of Composition Operators with Monomial Symbols on the Dirichlet Space

open access: yesAbstract and Applied Analysis, 2011
Let 𝜑(𝑧)=𝑧𝑛,𝑧∈𝕌, for some positive integer 𝑛 and 𝐶𝜑 the composition operator on the Dirichlet space 𝒟 induced by 𝜑. In this paper, we completely determine the point spectrum, spectrum, essential spectrum, and essential norm of the operators 𝐶∗𝜑𝐶𝜑,𝐶𝜑𝐶∗𝜑 ...

A Game-Theoretic Analysis of Baccara Chemin de Fer

open access: yesGames, 2013
Assuming that cards are dealt with replacement from a single deck and that each of Player and Banker sees the total of his own two-card hand but not its composition, baccara is a 2 x 288 matrix game, which was solved by Kemeny and Snell in 1957. Assuming
