Equitable Transfer Pathways: A Call to Action Through Critical Race Theory

open access: yesNew Directions for Community Colleges, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT A critical function of community colleges is student transfer into baccalaureate degree‐granting institutions. While over 80% of community college entrants indicate a desire to transfer, few students successfully do so and achieve their goal of graduating with a bachelor's degree.

Why Engineers Should Read More Novels

open access: yesChemie Ingenieur Technik, EarlyView.
What do engineers do? And what should they work on? A surprising answer is outlined in this essay, which argues that reading novels holds the key for addressing both questions. Novels train the imagination as well as our ethical abilities – skills that are essential for developing future‐proof technologies.

Pareto‐Optimal Treatment of Uncertainties in Model‐Based Process Design and Operation

open access: yesChemie Ingenieur Technik, EarlyView.
It is described how to handle here‐and‐now (i.e., process design‐related) and wait‐and‐see (i.e., process operation‐related) decisions in a multicriteria framework. This approach exploits the adjustability for the wait‐and‐see variables while at the same time respecting optimality guarantees on process key performance indicators.

Random discrete probability measures based on a negative binomial process

open access: yesCanadian Journal of Statistics, EarlyView.
Abstract A distinctive functional of the Poisson point process is the negative binomial process for which the increments are not independent but are independent conditional on an underlying gamma variable. Using a new point process representation for the negative binomial process, we generalize the Poisson–Kingman distribution and its corresponding ...
