In the following a polarizer will be described whose dielectric multilayer is not incorporated as a discontinuity in the planar waveguide as in /1/ but is deposited as a superstrate. A polarizer in the form of a dielectric multilayer and a glass plate (refractive index nG) is deposited as a superstrate on a planar waveguide (refractive index nF, film ...

Integrated Optics For Optical Computing
SPIE Proceedings, 1986Several prospective geometries for integrated optics in optical computing are outlined. These include 2-D, 1-D arrays, single element and integrated opto-electronic devices. Design calculations are presented for optical waveguide addressing of nonlinear etalons, for waveguiding large optical cavity multiple quantum wells, and waveguiding nonlinear ...

The appearance of “Integrated Optics: An Introduction” by Stewart E. Miller in the September 1969 Bell System Technical Journal signalled the birth of an activity that now occupies thousands of researchers. Bell Labs, among others, had been concerned with optical communications for some time, encouraged in this activity by the advent of the laser ...

Integrated optics for optical communication
1989In todays optical communication systems the link between electronics and the optical fibre cannot be made reliable and at reasonable cost simultaneously. It is one prominent task of integrated optics to remove this bottleneck by providing an opto-electronic converter as a monolithically integrated circuit.

Integrated Optics for Optical Communications
1987The present status of fibre optical communication can briefly be characterized by: - high data rate, long distance transmission in the 1.3–1.6 µm wavelength region with single-mode fibres; - the penetration of single-mode fibre links into subscriber loops and local area networks; - the growing interest in coherent detection systems.
