Profile of partners who completed HIV testing and received a new HIV diagnosis in Ukraine’s HIV index testing program: a retrospective cohort study to inform program improvement

open access: yesBMC Infectious Diseases, 2023
Background Approximately one-third of people living with HIV in Ukraine are unaware of their HIV status. Index testing (IT) is an evidence-based HIV testing strategy that supports voluntary notification of partners with HIV risk, so they can receive HIV ...

Low-Level HIV-I Replication and the Dynamics of the Resting CD4(+) T Cell Reservoir for HIV-I in the Setting of HAART [PDF]

open access: yes, 2008
In the setting of highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART), plasma levels of human immunodeficiency type-I (HIV-I) rapidly decay to below the limit of detection of standard clinical assays.

Revealing the structure of land plant photosystem II: the journey from negative‐stain EM to cryo‐EM

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Advances in cryo‐EM have revealed the detailed structure of Photosystem II, a key protein complex driving photosynthesis. This review traces the journey from early low‐resolution images to high‐resolution models, highlighting how these discoveries deepen our understanding of light harvesting and energy conversion in plants.

Tuberculosis in an urban hospital setting: Descriptive epidemiology among patients at Kenyatta National Hospital TB clinic, Nairobi, Kenya

open access: yesInternational Journal of Africa Nursing Sciences, 2021
Background: The prevalence of tuberculosis (TB) in low-to-middle-income countries is larger than that observed in developed countries. This study aimed to characterize TB disease among patients diagnosed at Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH) in Nairobi ...

Reciprocal control of viral infection and phosphoinositide dynamics

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Phosphoinositides, although scarce, regulate key cellular processes, including membrane dynamics and signaling. Viruses exploit these lipids to support their entry, replication, assembly, and egress. The central role of phosphoinositides in infection highlights phosphoinositide metabolism as a promising antiviral target.

Direct Numerical Demonstration of Sign-preserving Quasiparticle Interference via Impurity inside Vortex Core in Unconventional Superconductors

open access: yes, 2012
We perform large-scale numerical calculations self-consistently solving the Bogoliubov-de Gennes (BdG) equations in the magnetic field together with random impurities to directly demonstrate the typical quasi-particle interference (QPI) in the presence ...

An intracellular transporter mitigates the CO2‐induced decline in iron content in Arabidopsis shoots

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
This study identifies a gene encoding a transmembrane protein, MIC, which contributes to the reduction of shoot Fe content observed in plants under elevated CO2. MIC is a putative Fe transporter localized to the Golgi and endosomal compartments. Its post‐translational regulation in roots may represent a potential target for improving plant nutrition ...
