Improved intensity measures for probabilistic seismic demand analysis. Part 2: application of the improved intensity measures

open access: yes, 2011
This is the second of two companion papers on improved intensity measures of strong seismic ground motions for use in probabilistic seismic demand analysis of reinforced concrete frame buildings.

Septin 9 PB domains coordinate centrosome positioning and microtubule acetylation to control epithelial polarity

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Septin 9 polybasic domains couple phosphoinositide‐rich membrane binding to centrosome positioning, Golgi organization, and microtubule acetylation to control epithelial polarity. Their loss disrupts this axis, causing centrosome mispositioning, Golgi fragmentation, reduced microtubule acetylation, and polarity inversion via upregulation of the ...

Rab14 regulates the transport of human papillomavirus to the trans‐Golgi network for infectious cell entry

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
This study reveals that the small GTPase Rab14 is necessary for human papillomavirus (HPV) infection and plays an essential role in the transport of virions to the trans‐Golgi network (TGN). HPV in the early endosome (EE), which harbors GTP‐bound Rab14, is transported to the TGN through the switch of Rab14 from its GTP‐bound to GDP‐bound form.

Energy-intensity developments for 19 OECD countries and 51 sectors [PDF]

open access: yes
This paper presents stylized facts on energy-intensity developments for 19 OECD countries and 51 sectors over the period 1980âËâ2005. A principal aim of this paper is to introduce and discuss a new database that combines the recently launched ‘EU KLEMS ...

Investigating the Reliability of Ground Motion Intensity Measures

open access: yesAdvances in Civil Engineering
The uncertainty and unreliability in the probabilistic seismic demand models (PSDMs) can be addressed in the framework of performance-based earthquake engineering (PBEE).

Measurement of structural intensity [PDF]

open access: yesThe Journal of the Acoustical Society of America, 1995
The modeling of structural behavior leads to simplified models of very often complex structures. To get a better understanding of the energy flow inside and out of the structures, the development of measurement methods is very important. Dynamic movements are associated with vibratory and acoustic energy dissipation.

Degradation mechanism of the von Willebrand factor A2 domain by nattokinase

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Nattokinase, a natto‐derived protease, exhibits potent antithrombotic effects. This study demonstrates that nattokinase directly cleaves the von Willebrand factor (vWF) A2 domain in vitro. Unlike the native regulator ADAMTS13, nattokinase degrades folded vWF independently of shear stress.

Is there a relationship between pain intensity and postural sway in patients with non-specific low back pain? [PDF]

open access: yes, 2011
Background Increased center of pressure excursions are well documented in patients suffering from non-specific low back pain, whereby the altered postural sway includes both higher mean sway velocities and larger sway area.

A study of desmosome formation in kidney epithelial cells

open access: yes, 1988
Desmosomes are intercellular junctions mediating cell-cell adhesion. When epithelial cells are cultured in medium of low calcium concentration (< 0.05mM, LCM) desmosomes do not form but do so when the external calcium concentration is raised above 0.1
