Fluorescence Intensity Normalisation: Correcting for Time Effects in Large-Scale Flow Cytometric Analysis [PDF]
A next step to interpret the findings generated by genome-wide association studies is to associate molecular quantitative traits with disease-associated alleles. To this end, researchers are linking disease risk alleles with gene expression quantitative trait loci (eQTL). However, gene expression at the mRNA level is only an intermediate trait and flow

Balanced Quantum-Like Bayesian Networks
Empirical findings from cognitive psychology indicate that, in scenarios under high levels of uncertainty, many people tend to make irrational decisions.

A novel approach for predicting the standardised precipitation index considering climatic factors
Drought modelling is essential to managing water resources in arid regions to limit its impacts. Additionally, climate change has a significant effect on the frequency and intensity of drought.

A comparison on effects of normalisations in the detection of differentially expressed genes
Background Various normalisation techniques have been developed in the context of microarray analysis to try to correct expression measurements for experimental bias and random fluctuations.

Mortality has improved in RA, but we must remain vigilant. Response to: ‘Early intensive treatment normalises excess mortality in ACPA-negative RA but not in ACPA-positive RA’ by Matthijssen et al [PDF]
We compliment Matthijssen et al with this highly interesting analysis and results from the Leiden Early Arthritis Clinic. Their mortality results strongly support our findings1 and again emphasise that the focus should be on the excess mortality that emerges after 10 years.

Characterising the space–time structure of rainfall in the Sahel with a view to estimating IDAF curves [PDF]
Intensity–duration–area–frequency (IDAF) curves are increasingly demanded for characterising the severity of storms and for designing hydraulic structures.

Normalisation of total body iron load with very intensive combined chelation reverses cardiac and endocrine complications of thalassaemia major [PDF]
SummaryCardiac and endocrine disorders are common sequelae of iron overload in transfused thalassaemia patients. Combined chelation with desferrioxamine (DFO) and deferiprone (DFP) is well tolerated and produces an additive/synergistic effect superior to either drug alone.
