Interception loss from grass

Field studies were conducted for the purpose of measuring interception loss from an actively transpiring grass cover. Continuous records of evapotranspiration were obtained from a pair of floating lysimeters in a grass field. The grass cover on and around each lysimeter was sprinkled alternately.

This study was designed to evaluate a simple equation to estimate an annual interception lost. To design the equation, the input of the equation was modified to a very high resolution data. Statistical relationship between precipitation, temporal resolution and rainfall intensity was determined.

A note on the interception loss equation

Interception is the process in which precipitation is caught by a vegetative canopy and redistributed to the ground, to the atmosphere, or into the plant. Interception loss is that portion of the precipitation which is returned to the atmosphere through evaporation from plant surfaces or is absorbed into the plant.

An interception study of old rubber trees was carried out in Skudai, Johor. Out of 35 rainfall events recorded, only 28 produced measurable throughfall and stemflow. Throughfall and stemflow comprised 87% and 1.1% of the total rainfall, respectively. These resulted in interception loss of 12.1% of the rainfall.
