Rainfall Interception Loss by Forest Canopies

2011
When rain falls onto a forest a proportion is intercepted by the canopy and evaporates back into the atmosphere, playing no further part in the terrestrial portion of the hydrologic cycle. This canopy interception loss, I c, can be appreciable (Table 20.1).

Interception loss, throughfall and stemflow in a maritime pine stand. II. An application of Gash's analytical model of interception

Journal of Hydrology, 1992
Abstract Interception, throughfall and stemflow were determined in an 18-year-old maritime pine stand for a period of 30 months. This involved 71 rainfall events, each corresponding either to a single storm or to several storms. Gash's analytical model of interception was used to estimate the sensitivity of interception to canopy structure and ...

Research on Interception Losses and Soil Moisture Relationships

1988
Few scientists understand better than H. L. Penman (1963) the complexity of finding out what happens to the rain: “With few exceptions, they [i.e., field measurements] involve small differences between large quantities (of water) that cannot be measured with precision—rainfall, interception, surface runoff, streamflow, soil water content, stored ...

Interception loss as an underestimated component of evapotranspiration modelling in a forested catchment

2022
<p>Norway spruce monoculture stands often represent a typical vegetation cover in Central Europe and these stands impact the hydrological pattern on a catchment scale significantly. The processes of canopy interception, throughfall, snowmelt and land surface evaporation represent an important part of the water cycle in forested catchments.

THROUGHFALL, STEMFLOW AND INTERCEPTION LOSS OF OLD RUBBER TREES

Malaysian Journal of Civil Engineering, 2018
An interception study of old rubber trees was carried out in Skudai, Johor. Out of 35 rainfall events recorded, only 28 produced measurable throughfall and stemflow. Throughfall and stemflow comprised 87% and 1.1% of the total rainfall, respectively. These resulted in interception loss of 12.1% of the rainfall.

Throughfall, stemflow and interception loss of artificial tropical forest

2012 IEEE Colloquium on Humanities, Science and Engineering (CHUSER), 2012
An interception study of man-made forest was carried out in Bukit Lagong Reserved Forest. Out of 18 rainfall event recorded, all 18 events produce throughfall but only 15 events with measured stemflow. Two plots of 20m × 20m each were established to measure the distribution of interception (gross rainfall, P g , throughfall, T f and stemflow, S f ...

Net interception losses during sprinkler irrigation

Agricultural Meteorology, 1981
Abstract Micrometeorological theory of advection is used to model interception losses contingent on sprinkler irrigation. Using power-law descriptions of the wind speed and effective diffusivities appropriate for neutral conditions, equations are developed to calculate the evaporation enhancement from the area wetted by the spray droplets, and also ...

Towards sub-daily satellite-based interception loss estimates

2023
Terrestrial evaporation (E) plays a crucial role in the Earth system, acting as a link between the water and carbon cycles and playing a major role at the complex interplay between land and atmosphere. Therefore, accurate monitoring of E and its different components is crucial.

Light Interception as a Yield‐Loss Prediction Tool for Defoliation‐Induced Yield Loss in Soybean

Crop Management, 2011
Predicting yield loss from defoliating agents such as insects, diseases, and hail is an important objective for commercial soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr.] production. Because of its association with canopy photosynthetic rate, light interception has potential use as a yield‐loss prediction tool for defoliation‐induced yield loss.

Interception losses of rainfall from Cashew trees

Journal of Hydrology, 1987
Abstract The rainfall interception losses from Cashew trees were quantified, based on the records of 105 selected storms within the range ⩽ 25.0 mm, occurring in a humid tropical region at Kottamparamba, India. The storage capacity of the Cashew trees was worked out as 0.8 mm and the throughfall coefficient as 0.391. The trees under observation were
