Fracture dominant in friction stir spot welded joint between 6061 aluminum alloy and galvannealed steel based on microscale tensile testing

open access: yesMaterials & Design, 2022
The macroscale mechanical properties of dissimilar joints are generally influenced by the fracture behavior of joint interface. However, little is known about the dominant factor for the joint properties related with both macroscale fracture behavior and

Low-concentration tracer tests to measure air-water interfacial area in porous media

open access: yesChemosphere, 2020
The aqueous-based interfacial tracer method employing miscible-displacement tests is one method available for measuring air-water interfacial areas. One potential limitation to the method is the impact of tracer-induced drainage on the system. The objective of this study was to investigate the efficacy of a low-concentration tracer test method for ...

Interfacial assignment of branched-alkyl benzene sulfonates: A molecular simulation

open access: yesAIP Advances, 2015
A molecular dynamics simulation was conducted to analyze orientations of sodium branched-alkyl benzene sulfonates molecules at nonane/water interface, which is helpful to design optimal surfactant structures to achieve ultralow interfacial tension (IFT).

Interfacial area measurements in subcooled flow boiling

open access: yes, 2001
The purpose of the present study was to measure two-phase parameters in subcooled flow boiling. These parameters include void fraction distribution, interfacial area concentration distribution, Sauter mean diameter, and the interfacial velocity.

Valosin‐containing protein counteracts ATP‐driven dissolution of FUS condensates through its ATPase activity in vitro

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Biomolecular condensates formed by fused in sarcoma (FUS) are dissolved by high ATP concentrations yet persist in cells. Using a reconstituted system, we demonstrate that valosin‐containing protein (VCP), an AAA+ ATPase, counteracts ATP‐driven dissolution of FUS condensates through its D2 ATPase activity.

Two-phase flow experimental studies in micro-models [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
The aim of this research project was to put more physics into theories of two-phase flow. The significance of including interfacial area as a separate variable in two-phase flow and transport models was investigated.

Organizing the interface—Plasma membrane architecture and receptor dynamics in virus‐cell interactions

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Plasma membranes contain dynamic nanoscale domains that organize lipids and receptors. Because viruses operate at similar scales, this architecture shapes early infection steps, including attachment, receptor engagement, and entry. Using influenza A virus and HIV‐1 as examples, we highlight how receptor nanoclusters, multivalent glycan interactions ...

Enhanced antibacterial activity of ZnO-PMMA nanocomposites by selective plasma etching in atmospheric pressure

open access: yesMicro and Nano Engineering, 2021
We present an alternative route to enhance antibacterial activity of polymer matrix nanocomposites that incorporate biocidal nanomaterials, using open-air atmospheric pressure plasma etching.

Salmonella lipopolysaccharide‐containing supported lipid bilayers as platforms to study bacteriophage interactions

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We present robust protocols for the preparation of supported lipid bilayers (SLBs) incorporating either Salmonella smooth LPS or outer membrane vesicles (OMVs). We use a combination of quartz crystal microbalance with dissipation (QCM‐D) and fluorescence microscopy to both characterize the SLBs of various compositions and to probe their interactions ...

Temperature Effects on Interfacial Area Concentration and Void Fraction in LBE-N2 Bubbly Flow

open access: yesApplied Sciences
Temperature-dependent local two-phase flow parameters in lead–bismuth eutectic (LBE)–gas bubbly flows are essential for validating the closure models used in safety analyses of steam generator or heat exchanger tube rupture accidents in lead-cooled fast ...
