Nucleation in binary polymer blends: A self-consistent field study [PDF]

open access: yes, 2002
We study the structure and thermodynamics of the critical nuclei in metastable binary polymer blends using the self-consistent field method. At the mean-field level, our results are valid throughout the entire metastable region and provide a smooth ...

Mapping the evolution of mitochondrial complex I through structural variation

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Respiratory complex I (CI) is crucial for bioenergetic metabolism in many prokaryotes and eukaryotes. It is composed of a conserved set of core subunits and additional accessory subunits that vary depending on the organism. Here, we categorize CI subunits from available structures to map the evolution of CI across eukaryotes. Respiratory complex I (CI)

Interfacial roughening in non-ideal fluids: Dynamic scaling in the weak- and strong-damping regime

open access: yes, 2013
Interfacial roughening denotes the nonequilibrium process by which an initially flat interface reaches its equilibrium state, characterized by the presence of thermally excited capillary waves.

Structure, interfacial film properties, and thermal fluctuations of microemulsions as seen by scattering experiments [PDF]

open access: yesAdvances in Colloid and Interface Science, 2017
The physics of microemulsions and in particular Dominique Langevin's contributions to the understanding of microemulsion structure and bending properties using scattering techniques are reviewed. Among the many methods used by her and her co-workers, we particularly emphasize optical techniques and small angle neutron scattering (SANS), but also ...

Reciprocal control of viral infection and phosphoinositide dynamics

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Phosphoinositides, although scarce, regulate key cellular processes, including membrane dynamics and signaling. Viruses exploit these lipids to support their entry, replication, assembly, and egress. The central role of phosphoinositides in infection highlights phosphoinositide metabolism as a promising antiviral target.

The effect of Zn interlayer on microstructure and mechanical performance during TIG overlap welding-brazing of Al to Ti

open access: yesMaterials Research Express, 2020
Tungsten inert gas welding-brazing technology was investigated to achieve the sound joining of Al-Ti alloys with the addition of Zn interlayer. Experiment results show that the Zn interlayer was beneficial to enhance the wettability of weld metal on Ti ...

AFM Nanotribomechanical Characterization of Thin Films for MEMS Applications

open access: yesMicromachines, 2021
Nanotribological studies of thin films are needed to develop a fundamental understanding of the phenomena that occur to the interface surfaces that come in contact at the micro and nanoscale and to study the interfacial phenomena that occur in ...

Stochastic thermodynamics for active matter

open access: yes, 2016
The theoretical understanding of active matter, which is driven out of equilibrium by directed motion, is still fragmental and model oriented. Stochastic thermodynamics, on the other hand, is a comprehensive theoretical framework for driven systems that ...

In situ molecular organization and heterogeneity of the Legionella Dot/Icm T4SS

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We present a nearly complete in situ model of the Legionella Dot/Icm type IV secretion system, revealing its central secretion channel and identifying new components. Using cryo‐electron tomography with AI‐based modeling, our work highlights the structure, variability, and mechanism of this complex nanomachine, advancing understanding of bacterial ...

Intrinsic profiles and capillary waves at homopolymer interfaces: a Monte Carlo study

open access: yes, 1998
A popular concept which describes the structure of polymer interfaces by ``intrinsic profiles'' centered around a two dimensional surface, the ``local interface position'', is tested by extensive Monte Carlo simulations of interfaces between demixed ...
