Structural instability impairs function of the UDP‐xylose synthase 1 Ile181Asn variant associated with short‐stature genetic syndrome in humans

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
The Ile181Asn variant of human UDP‐xylose synthase (hUXS1), associated with a short‐stature genetic syndrome, has previously been reported as inactive. Our findings demonstrate that Ile181Asn‐hUXS1 retains catalytic activity similar to the wild‐type but exhibits reduced stability, a looser oligomeric state, and an increased tendency to precipitate ...

Compositionally Sequenced Interfacial Layers for High‐Energy Li‐Metal Batteries

open access: yesAdvanced Science
Electrolyte additives with multiple functions enable the interfacial engineering of Li‐metal batteries (LMBs). Owing to their unique reduction behavior, additives exhibit a high potential for electrode surface modification that increases the ...

Observation of fluctuation-induced tunneling conduction in micrometer-sized tunnel junctions

open access: yesAIP Advances, 2012
Micrometer-sized Al/AlOx/Y tunnel junctions were fabricated by the electron-beam lithography technique. The thin (≈ 1.5–2 nm thickness) insulating AlOx layer was grown on top of the Al base electrode by O2 glow discharge.

Interfaces between highly incompatible polymers of different stiffness: Monte Carlo simulations and self-consistent field calculations

open access: yes, 1997
We investigate interfacial properties between two highly incompatible polymers of different stiffness. The extensive Monte Carlo simulations of the binary polymer melt yield detailed interfacial profiles and the interfacial tension via an analysis of ...

Cell wall target fragment discovery using a low‐cost, minimal fragment library

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
LoCoFrag100 is a fragment library made up of 100 different compounds. Similarity between the fragments is minimized and 10 different fragments are mixed into a single cocktail, which is soaked to protein crystals. These crystals are analysed by X‐ray crystallography, revealing the binding modes of the bound fragment ligands.

Fluctuating Interfaces in Barotropic Beta‐Plane Turbulence

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters
Zonal jets manifest themselves as bands with sharp interfaces in the vorticity configuration. We develop an algorithm to track these fluctuating vorticity interfaces and systematically investigate their characteristic spatio‐temporal behaviors. While the

Phase field theory of crystal nucleation in hard sphere liquid

open access: yes, 2003
The phase field theory of crystal nucleation described in [L. Granasy, T. Borzsonyi, T. Pusztai, Phys. Rev. Lett. 88, 206105 (2002)] is applied for nucleation in hard--sphere liquids. The exact thermodynamics from molecular dynamics is used.

Structural biology of ferritin nanocages

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Ferritin is a conserved iron‐storage protein that sequesters iron as a ferric mineral core within a nanocage, protecting cells from oxidative damage and maintaining iron homeostasis. This review discusses ferritin biology, structure, and function, and highlights recent cryo‐EM studies revealing mechanisms of ferritinophagy, cellular iron uptake, and ...
