The Influence of Interfacial Energies on Igneous Microstructures [PDF]

The thermal history of igneous rocks is encoded in their microstructures via the control by cooling rate on crystal growth. If temperatures remain close to the liquidus, with small undercoolings, growth rates are low and microstructures are strongly affected by constraints imposed by interfacial energies.

Microemulsion microstructure and interfacial curvature

The typical phase behavior of microemulsion systems undergoing phase inversion is briefly reviewed. As a model system H2O-n-octane-C12E5 is studied with various experimental techniques. The occurring microstructures are visualized by freeze fracture electron microscopy and the corresponding domain sizes are quantified by small-angle neutron scattering.

The microstructural characteristics of the Ti(3)AlC(2)/Al(2)O(3) interface have been investigated by means of transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Interfacial microstructure evolution in Pb-free solder systems

The Sn-3.5Ag and Sn-3.0Ag-0.5Cu ball-grid-array solder balls bonded onto Ni/Au metallization exhibited different interfacial morphology after both wetting and solid-state reactions. In contrast to the eutectic-SnPb solder system, both Pb-free systems showed higher solder-ball shear strength after annealing.

Interfacial microstructure of cenosphere fly ash/Al composites

Lightweight aluminum matrix composites were fabricated by the pressure infiltrating molten pure Al or 6061Al into the packed preforms of hollow-structured cenosphere fly ash. The optical microstructure of the composites demonstrated a uniform distribution of the fly ash in the aluminum matrix and seldom infiltration of cenospheres.
