The artisanal underground: gold, subsistence, and subsurface materiality in Colombia

open access: yesJournal of the Royal Anthropological Institute, Volume 31, Issue 2, Page 353-375, June 2025.
Abstract This article focuses on subsurface materiality to explore how small‐scale gold miners in Colombia navigate formal politics. In much critical research, the underground appears as a space of great developmentalist ambition, whose resources enable corporate expansion and bureaucratic rule.

Chasing (macro)elements in microinvertebrates: A new methodological approach for quantitative and qualitative analyses of phosphorus by PIXE (Particle‐Induced X‐Ray Emission) applied to glacier tardigrades

open access: yesMethods in Ecology and Evolution, Volume 16, Issue 6, Page 1160-1172, June 2025.
Abstract Microinvertebrates in harsh environments often occupy the highest trophic levels and directly influence the turnover of macroelements. However, the investigation of their body elemental composition is complicated due to their low dry weight or sample size hindering the application of established methodological approaches.

Methods to account for incomplete viewsheds in distance sampling

open access: yesMethods in Ecology and Evolution, Volume 16, Issue 6, Page 1201-1214, June 2025.
Abstract Conventional distance sampling is a logistically feasible method for estimating densities of unmarked animals. The probability density function (PDF) of the sampling area specifies the expected proportion of the population that occurs at each distance from the observer and is a fundamental component of distance sampling models.

Genealogies and oral histories as chronological networks: interfacing whakapapa (Māori genealogies) with Gregorian calendar year archaeological radiocarbon dates

open access: yesExpert Systems, Volume 42, Issue 6, June 2025.
ABSTRACT Automated vehicles represent a rapidly expanding global market, drawing significant attention from both industry and academia. However, existing solutions often lack transparency, particularly in the disclosure of architectural designs, resulting in fragmented development approaches.
