The Prefusogenic Intermediate of HIV-1 gp41 Contains Exposed C-peptide Regions [PDF]

open access: yes, 2003
The human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) envelope glycoprotein is composed of a complex between the surface subunit gp120, which binds to cellular receptors, and the transmembrane subunit gp41.

Transferrin receptor 1‐mediated iron uptake supports thermogenic activation in human cervical‐derived adipocytes

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
In this study, we found that human cervical‐derived adipocytes maintain intracellular iron level by regulating the expression of iron transport‐related proteins during adrenergic stimulation. Melanotransferrin is predicted to interact with transferrin receptor 1 based on in silico analysis.

Influence of gamification on skill-based training of surgical residents

open access: yesInternational Journal of Serious Games
Potentially games increase motivation and thus support the learning process. Gamification effect on different skill levels of surgical residents was limitedly studied.

Distinguished Pre-Nichols algebras [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
We formally define and study the distinguished pre-Nichols algebra $\widetilde{\mathcal{B}}(V)$ of a braided vector space of diagonal type $V$ with finite-dimensional Nichols algebra $\mathcal{B}(V)$. The algebra $\widetilde{\mathcal{B}}(V)$ is presented

Calpain small subunit homodimerization is robust and calcium‐independent

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Calpains dimerize via penta‐EF‐hand (PEF) domains. Using single‐molecule force spectroscopy, we measured the strength and kinetics of PEF–PEF homodimer binding. The interaction is robust, shows a transient conformational step before dissociation, and remains largely insensitive to Ca2+.

Impact of test format on vocabulary test performance of EFL learners: the role of gender

open access: yesLanguage Testing in Asia, 2020
This study aimed to examine the effect of test format on test performance by comparing Multiple Choice (MC) and Constructed Response (CR) vocabulary tests in an EFL setting.

Self-truncation and scaling in Euler-Voigt-$\alpha$ and related fluid models

open access: yes, 2015
A generalization of the $3D$ Euler-Voigt-$\alpha$ model is obtained by introducing derivatives of arbitrary order $\beta$ (instead of $2$) in the Helmholtz operator.

Gut microbiome and aging—A dynamic interplay of microbes, metabolites, and the immune system

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Age‐dependent shifts in microbial communities engender shifts in microbial metabolite profiles. These in turn drive shifts in barrier surface permeability of the gut and brain and induce immune activation. When paired with preexisting age‐related chronic inflammation this increases the risk of neuroinflammation and neurodegenerative diseases.

Hyperosmotic stress induces PARP1‐mediated HPF1‐dependent mono(ADP‐ribosyl)ation

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Sorbitol‐induced hyperosmotic stress rapidly induces reversible mono(ADP‐ribosyl)ation (MARylation) on PARP1 without the signs of genotoxic signaling. We show that PARP1 autoMARylation is HPF1 dependent and forms hydroxylamine‐resistant O‐glycosidic linkages.
