Orthopaedic surgery [PDF]

open access: yes, 2005
Over the past fifty years orthopaedic surgery made giant strides forward. It developed from a discipline that dealt primarily with the treatment of fractures, bone infections and tendon transfers and that treated degenerate joints by fusing them to one ...

Outcomes of total hip arthroplasty, as a salvage procedure, following failed internal fixation of intracapsular fractures of the femoral neck: a systematic review and meta-analysis. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
AIMS: The optimal management of intracapsular fractures of the femoral neck in independently mobile patients remains open to debate. Successful fixation obviates the limitations of arthroplasty for this group of patients.

Adenosine‐to‐inosine editing of miR‐200b‐3p is associated with the progression of high‐grade serous ovarian cancer

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
A‐to‐I editing of miRNAs, particularly miR‐200b‐3p, contributes to HGSOC progression by enhancing cancer cell proliferation, migration and 3D growth. The edited form is linked to poorer patient survival and the identification of novel molecular targets.

Dual mobility total hip arthroplasty for salvaging failed internal fixation for neck of femur fractures

open access: yesJournal of Orthopaedics, Trauma and Rehabilitation, 2020
Internal fixation is commonly used to treat fractures in the hip. However, failure of proximal femoral fracture fixation is common and treated with total hip replacement (THR). The aim of this study is to present our midterm results of dual mobility (DM)

Hypomethylating agents increase L1 retroelement expression without inducing novel insertions in myeloid malignancies

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
We investigated whether hypomethylating agents (HMAs) used in myeloid malignancies induce somatic retrotransposition. Our findings indicate that HMA treatment increases L1‐encoded protein expression but does not lead to detectable de novo retrotransposition events in either patient samples or cell lines.

Is removal of the internal fixation after successful intervertebral fusion necessary? A case–control study based on patient-reported quality of life

open access: yesJournal of Orthopaedic Surgery and Research, 2022
Background Intervertebral fusion and internal fixation are often applied to patients with lumbar spinal disease. Whether to remove the internal fixation after successful fusion remains uncertain, but such a question needs to be explored in light of ...

Communicating Study Results to Our Patients: Which Way Is Best? [PDF]

open access: yes, 2008
Before we are able to communicate evidence and evidence results to patients we must first be familiar with the common ways by which results may be presented to our patients. We describe five approaches (relative risk, risk reduction, odds ratio, absolute

PYCR1 inhibition in bone marrow stromal cells enhances bortezomib sensitivity in multiple myeloma cells by altering their metabolism

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
This study investigated how PYCR1 inhibition in bone marrow stromal cells (BMSCs) indirectly affects multiple myeloma (MM) cell metabolism and viability. Culturing MM cells in conditioned medium from PYCR1‐silenced BMSCs impaired oxidative phosphorylation and increased sensitivity to bortezomib.

Patient‐specific pharmacogenomics demonstrates xCT as predictive therapeutic target in colon cancer with possible implications in tumor connectivity

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
This study integrates transcriptomic profiling of matched tumor and healthy tissues from 32 colorectal cancer patients with functional validation in patient‐derived organoids, revealing dysregulated metabolic programs driven by overexpressed xCT (SLC7A11) and SLC3A2, identifying an oncogenic cystine/glutamate transporter signature linked to ...

Biomechanical study of different internal fixation devices for femoral neck fractures: finite element analysis based on different reduction qualities

open access: yesFrontiers in Bioengineering and Biotechnology
ObjectiveTo compare and analyze the biomechanical advantages and disadvantages of four cannulated screws (4CCS) internal fixation device, biplanar double support screw (BDSF) internal fixation device, and dynamic hip screw (DHS) internal fixation device ...
