Coherency Loss and Internal Friction

Physica Status Solidi (a), 1971
Internal friction due to precipitates has been studied in a Cu–3%Co alloy after ageing and cold working. Comparison with results of electron transmission observations from the literature shows conclusively that only in coherent precipitates produce an internal friction peak. This confirms earlier theoretical predictions.

THE INTERNAL FRICTION OF METALS

International Materials Reviews, 1962
Soundly based metallurgical interest in the internal friction of solids dates from the appearance of Zener's text “Elasticity and Anelasticity of Metals” in 1948.

On the Theory of Internal Friction in Metals

Proceedings of the Physical Society. Section A, 1953
The absorption and emission of vibrational quanta by the conduction electrons in metals leads to a contribution ?2?F?/K0(10-3) to the internal friction per cycle independent of frequency. This holds only for longitudinal vibrations whose wavelength is sufficiently small compared with the dimensions of the sample. In the above ?
