Experiments on solitary internal Kelvin waves

Deep Sea Research Part B. Oceanographic Literature Review, 1983
Elementary calculations indicate that the effect of the Earth's rotation is likely to be important in the dynamics of most internal waves in oceans, lakes and the atmosphere. Here we present measurements of the structure and properties of one class of such waves, namely solitary internal Kelvin waves, in which the Coriolis force generated by wave ...

The stability of internal solitary waves

Mathematical Proceedings of the Cambridge Philosophical Society, 1983
A theory is developed relating to the stability of solitary-wave solutions of the so-called Benjamin-Ono equation. This equation was derived by Benjamin (5) as a model for the propagation of internal waves in an incompressible non-diffusive heterogeneous fluid for which the density is non-constant only within a layer whose thickness is much smaller ...

Experiments on leapfrogging internal solitary waves

Journal of Fluid Mechanics, 1982
Experiments on the resonant energy transfer between internal gravity-wave solitons travelling along neighbouring pycnoclines have been performed. Measurements of both amplitude and phase oscillations are found to be in qualitative agreement with theoretical predictions given in the companion paper by Liu, Pereira & KO (1982).

On the applicability of Morison equation to force estimation induced by internal solitary wave on circular cylinder

, 2020
The current field induced by internal solitary wave can be quite large and it can cause destruction to marine structures. In recent years the forces induced by internal solitary wave on circular cylinder have been studied extensively, and Morison ...

Self-sustained instability, transition, and turbulence induced by a long separation bubble in the footprint of an internal solitary wave. I. Flow topology

, 2020
Using a high-accuracy-and-resolution implicit Large Eddy Simulation we study the development of the bottom boundary layer (BBL) driven by the long separation bubble which forms under an internal solitary wave (ISW) of depression propagating against a ...

Solitary internal waves with oscillatory tails

Journal of Fluid Mechanics, 1992
Solitary internal waves in a density-stratified fluid of shallow depth are considered. According to the classical weakly nonlinear long-wave theory, the propagation of each long-wave mode is governed by the Korteweg–de Vries equation to leading order, and locally confined solitary waves with a ‘sech’ profile are possible.

Large internal solitary waves on a weak shear

Chaos: An Interdisciplinary Journal of Nonlinear Science, 2022
Large amplitude solitary internal waves of permanent form propagating in a stratified shallow fluid between the free surface and a horizontal bottom are described by the amplitude equation obtained by a regular asymptotic procedure, which incorporates a complicated nonlinearity and Korteweg–de Vries (KdV) dispersion.

Numerical Investigation of Bidirectional Mode-1 and Mode-2 Internal Solitary Wave Generation from North and South of Batti Malv Island, Nicobar Islands, India

, 2020
Strong bidirectional internal solitary waves (ISWs) generate from a shallow channel between Car Nicobar and Chowra Islands of Nicobar Islands, India, and propagate toward the Andaman Sea (eastward) and Bay of Bengal (westward).

Weak and Strong Interactions between Internal Solitary Waves

Studies in Applied Mathematics, 1984
The interaction of weakly nonlinear long internal gravity waves is studied. Weak interactions occur when the wave phase speeds are unequal; this case includes that of a head‐on collision. It is shown that each wave satisfies a Korteweg‐de Vries equation, and the main effect of the interaction is described by a phase shift.

Yellow Sea Internal Solitary Wave Variability

2002
Our studies are centered in an area south of the Shandong peninsula where the observations of Zhou, Zhang and Rogers [1] showed an anomalous drop in acoustical intensity at 630 Hz. For this region ocean-acoustic modeling studies are performed in conjunction with available SAR observations of internal solitary waves.
