Internal Tides. Global Field of Internal Tides and Mixing Caused by Internal Tides

2007
Different approaches to the study of internal waves in the ocean are analyzed. Generation of internal tides over submarine ridges is considered on the basis of numerical models and measurements in the ocean. Energy fluxes from submarine ridges exceed many times the fluxes from continental slopes because the dominating part of the tidal flow is directed

Internal tides in the ocean

Reviews of Geophysics, 1975
Theory and observations of internal tides in the oceans are reviewed. Internal tides are simply a form of internal wave with quasi‐tidal periodicity, though north of their inertial latitudes they should be trapped to bottom topographic features, including continental shelves.

Global internal tides from satellite altimetry: Next-generation internal tide model and internal tide oceanic tomography

2017
Empirical internal tide models from past multisatellite altimeters are the only observational and currently the most reliable models. However, all current altimeter-based internal tide models represent the ~20-year-long coherent component and miss the incoherent component.

Internal Tides in the Denmark Strait

Izvestiya, Atmospheric and Oceanic Physics, 2019
Six-day temperature records carried out at the three mooring levels revealed isotherm fluctuations in the Denmark Strait sill in July 2018 caused by internal waves. In addition to the field measurements, fluctuations of isopycnals were estimated on the basis of a numerical model.

Properties of Internal Tides

2018
This chapter describes some important properties of internal tides. The diurnal and semidiurnal spectral peaks related to the internal tides consist of separate waves with close frequencies. Internal tides are modulated due to the spring-neap variability of the barotropic tide that generates them.

Internal tides and resonance

1995
This thesis is a study of resonant internal tide motion. One common linear inviscid model represents the motion in terms of a two dimensional stream function satisfying a standard second order hyperbolic equation. This model is examined in detail and it is shown that existing solution techniques can be extended and unified with the classical theory of ...

Internal Tides and Ocean Mixing

Science, 2003
Recent satellite and in situ observations have shown that at ocean ridges and other seafloor topographic features, a substantial amount of energy is transferred from the main ocean tides into "internal tides." In his Perspective, Garrett explains how these internal waves with tidal periods propagate through the density-stratified deep ocean and

On internal tide generation models

Deep Sea Research Part A. Oceanographic Research Papers, 1982
This paper discusses linear generation models for internal tides over large topographic features such as continental slopes, with the objects of making the procedures simpler and more adaptable to oceanic situations than heretofore, providing a unified summary of the mechanics involved, and estimating the global internal tide energy generation at all ...

Numerical Modelling of Internal Tides

1987
Internal tides in the ocean may be described by a linear, second-order hyperbolic equation, which may be integrated numerically on a grid defined in the characteristic directions. At lateral boundaries, the solution must satisfy a radiation condition, expressed as a sum of internal modes.

Internal tides in Uchiura Bay

Journal of the Oceanographical Society of Japan, 1985
Long-term temperature measurements of the subsurface layer near Uchiura-Bay head were made in summer 1978 and 1979 to further investigate the characteristics of the internal tides in more detail. The temperature measurements indicate that the internal tides were present at all times during the observational period.
