Semidiurnal internal tides in a Patagonian fjord

open access: yesProgress in Oceanography, 2014
Abstract The fjords of central Chilean Patagonia (47°S) receive fresh water from both precipitation and the Baker River. This buoyancy input generates a two layer hydrographic system characterized by strong salinity stratification (∼30 g kg−1 over a depth range of 7–15 m), which favors baroclinic conditions in the fjord.

Process-based modelling of nonharmonic internal tides using adjoint, statistical, and stochastic approaches – Part 2: Adjoint frequency response analysis, stochastic models, and synthesis [PDF]

open access: yesOcean Science
Internal tides are known to contain a substantial component that cannot be explained by (deterministic) harmonic analysis, and the remaining nonharmonic component is considered to be caused by random oceanic variability.

Review of research in internal-wave and internal-tide deposits of China: Discussion

open access: yesJournal of Palaeogeography, 2014
This discussion of a review article by [27], published in the Journal of Palaeogeography (2(1): 56– 65), is aimed at illustrating that interpretations of ten ancient examples in China and one in the central Appalachians (USA) as deep-water deposits of ...

Satellite Investigation of Semidiurnal Internal Tides in the Sulu-Sulawesi Seas

open access: yesRemote Sensing, 2021
The mode-1 semidiurnal internal tides that emanate from multiple sources in the Sulu-Sulawesi Seas are investigated using multi-satellite altimeter data from 1993–2020.

Nonlinear Disintegration of the Internal Tide [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Physical Oceanography, 2008
Abstract The disintegration of a first-mode internal tide into shorter solitary-like waves is considered. Since observations frequently show both tides and waves with amplitudes beyond the restrictions of weakly nonlinear theory, the evolution is studied using a fully nonlinear, weakly nonhydrostatic two-layer theory that includes ...

Hydrogel‐Based Airway‐on‐Tube With Perfusable Endothelial Lumen and Outward Epithelialization

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
A hydrogel‐based airway‐on‐tube platform featuring a perfusable endothelial lumen and outward epithelialization is presented. The system supports primary human bronchial epithelial and lung microvascular endothelial coculture under air‐liquid interface conditions.

Rational Tuning of Hygroscopic Oscillation of Stacked Nanoflake Assemblies for Continuous Ambient Energy Harvesting

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
Stacked nanoflake assembly (SNA) membranes can oscillate autonomously, offering opportunities for soft actuation and energy harvesting. This work uncovers the physical mechanism behind the sustained oscillation of SNA membranes in gradient humidity and identifies three governing dimensionless parameters, enabling rational design for optimizing SNA ...

A Parameterization of Local and Remote Tidal Mixing

open access: yesJournal of Advances in Modeling Earth Systems, 2020
Vertical mixing is often regarded as the Achilles' heel of ocean models. In particular, few models include a comprehensive and energy‐constrained parameterization of mixing by internal ocean tides.

Examining Modulations of Internal Tides within An Anticyclonic Eddy Using a Wavelet-Coherence Network Approach

open access: yesApplied Sciences
Interactions between internal tides and mesoscale eddies are an important topic. However, examining modulations of internal tides inside a mesoscale eddy based on observations is difficult due to limited observation duration and inaccurate positioning ...
